DNO - On September 26, the Northern Mountainous Region General Hospital of Quang Nam announced that it had just received and successfully treated a case of a young child swallowing a dangerous foreign object.

The foreign object removed was a metal keychain, approximately 2x3cm in size.

The patient is a 4-year-old boy, admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and discomfort. His family said that while taking a nap, he accidentally swallowed a backpack zipper.

After examination and X-ray, doctors discovered a radiopaque foreign object in the abdomen, corresponding to the position of the L3 lumbar vertebra.

The procedure under general anesthesia went smoothly. The foreign object removed was a metal keychain, approximately 2x3cm in size. After the intervention, the patient's health was stable.

Doctors warn that letting young children play with small, sharp objects or objects that can easily be put in their mouths such as key chains, staples, buttons, batteries, magnets, etc. poses many potential risks of accidents.

In many cases, parents do not detect it in time, only when the child has severe abdominal pain or vomiting do they take the child to a medical facility.

Doctors note that if you suspect a child has swallowed a foreign object, you should take them to the hospital as soon as possible. Never try to clear their throat or give them medicine, as this could cause the object to move deeper and cause serious damage.
