On the morning of May 10, the Command of Naval Region 4 announced that on the afternoon of May 9, the Song Tu Tay Island Infirmary, Truong Sa Island District, Khanh Hoa Province received and treated a fisherman from Binh Thuan Province who suffered from severe acute decompression sickness while fishing in the Truong Sa Island area.
The patient is Mr. Tran Van Uu, born in 1986, a crew member of fishing boat BT 97669 TS captained by Mr. Tran Huu Khiem, a local.
According to the captain, recently, Mr. Uu has made many deep dives that lasted for hours, such as on May 8, there were two dives, the first lasting 3 hours at a depth of 20m; the second lasting 2 hours.
After these dives, Mr. Uu experienced symptoms of numbness, weakness in his limbs, and difficulty urinating. However, due to work, on May 9, Mr. Uu continued diving for 2 hours at a depth of 8m and after boarding the ship, the above symptoms gradually increased, so the captain turned the ship towards Song Tu Tay Island and took Mr. Uu to the island's infirmary for emergency treatment.
When admitted to Song Tu Tay Island Infirmary, the patient was conscious, responsive, and had relatively stable vital signs, but had numbness from below the navel down, weakness in both legs, and difficulty urinating...
Through examination, doctors from Brigade 146 at Song Tu Tay Island Infirmary diagnosed Mr. Uu with severe acute decompression sickness (type 2) at the 20th hour, due to diving 20m deep.
Next, the doctors and nurses consulted with the Naval Medical Institute ( Hai Phong city), then performed re-increased blood pressure treatment according to protocol 6, intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, catheterization, anti-platelet aggregation... for the patient. Currently, Mr. Uu is assigned to stay on Song Tu Tay island for monitoring and treatment.
Since the beginning of the year, Song Tu Tay Clinic has received and treated many cases of fishermen who encountered health problems while exploiting seafood in the Truong Sa sea area, including some cases of decompression sickness due to diving to exploit seafood.
Most recently, on April 27, the infirmary promptly received and treated Mr. Dang An, born in 1992, residing in Hoai Thanh ward, Hoai Nhon town, Binh Dinh province, a crew member of fishing boat BD 98291TS, who also suffered from severe acute decompression due to diving at a depth of 35m of water./.
