Dao Khuong Duy won first prize at the UPU with his letter transforming into a superhero, fighting the evil spirit of traffic accidents to protect children, surpassing more than a million other entries.

"I'm very happy, I didn't think I'd get such a high prize," said Dao Khuong Duy, class 6/1, Huynh Tan Phat Secondary School, Binh Dai District, Ben Tre Province. With the first prize in Vietnam, Duy received a prize of 5 million VND.

The UPU International Letter Writing Competition has been organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) since 1971. In Vietnam, this is the 35th time the competition has been launched, for students from 9 to 15 years old. According to the results announced on April 25, from more than one million submitted entries, in addition to Duy's first prize, the organizing committee selected three second prizes, five third prizes, 30 consolation prizes and a number of other secondary prizes.

The theme of this year's contest is: "Imagine you are a superhero on a mission to make the world's roads safer for children. Write a letter to someone to tell them about the superpower that will help you fulfill your mission."

Duy said he was very excited when he read the question. He has been fascinated by superheroes for a long time because "this character can fly and help others".

In the letter to his parents, Duy transformed into a superhero S-24/7, from the planet Love-365, fighting every minute and every second with the evil god of traffic accidents to protect children around the world. The boy said he named the superhero S-24/7 because it was simple and easy to remember.

"The letter S is the beginning of many beautiful words on Earth such as superhero, sacrifice, safety. And 24/7 is a superhero who is always present anytime, anywhere," Duy explained. Meanwhile, Love-365 symbolizes 365 days of love on Earth.

Therefore, Duy describes the superhero S-24/7 as having many special abilities such as transforming into anyone, cloning, traveling through space faster than light, and exchanging human thoughts. But the most precious thing about S-24/7 is his love for all species.

The letter ends with the hope that "everyone who travels far away wants to come home, even superheroes."

"When all roads on Earth are truly safe for children, I will return home. That day may still be far away, but I hope you and your parents will cherish faith and hope with me," the letter reads.

The sixth grader said the idea for writing the letter came from real-life situations he encountered every day. Duy’s house is in Vinh Chau hamlet, Vang Quoi Tay commune, near the national highway. Every day, Duy saw heavy traffic on the road, many people driving recklessly, causing tragic accidents.

"I want to advise everyone to obey traffic laws and not drive recklessly," Duy said, adding that he spent 20 days writing the letter. After finishing, he asked his parents to proofread it and correct spelling mistakes.

When she learned that her son had won first prize, Huynh Thi Thao Tien, Duy's mother, could not believe it. "As a student from a remote area, suddenly becoming famous surprised my son and his family. He smiled the whole time because he was so happy," said Tien.

According to Ms. Tien, since childhood, Duy has loved reading books, especially books about History, stories about heroes and superheroes.

"My son knows Vietnamese history by heart, so much so that he doesn't need to review his lessons in History class. He talks about dynasties and notable events in great detail, which surprises me," said Ms. Tien. The mother also acknowledged that her son is emotional, serious and focused on his studies.

"Duy has never attended extra classes and only studies at home. Every time I attend parent-teacher meetings, I feel proud that my son is always set as an example in front of the class," she said.

Mr. Le Hoang Phong, headmaster of Huynh Tan Phat Secondary School, was impressed with his small but good-natured and active student. Duy studied all subjects, including History, Math and IT, and participated in and won many competitions at school.

According to Mr. Phong, Duy is the first student from Ben Tre to win first prize at the national level in the UPU letter writing contest. This year, with 336/620 students participating, Huynh Tan Phat Secondary School also won first prize collectively.

Duy’s winning letter will be translated into English or French and sent along with the original Vietnamese to the Universal Postal Union office in Bern, Switzerland. From the letters sent from all over the world, the jury will select the first, second and third prizes.

In 2022, Nguyen Binh Nguyen, class 9A1, Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi , won the national first prize and international encouragement prize.
