Temporary wind power bridge blocks the flow, Khe Sanh residents suffer from flooding

During heavy rains, the Km1+700 section of Provincial Road 587 through Van Ri village, Khe Sanh commune, Quang Tri province is deeply flooded, cutting off traffic, posing many potential dangers to people. The cause was determined to be a temporary bridge built by a wind power company in 2021, obstructing the flow of water. Although it has committed to dismantling and building a new bridge to replace it, it has not been implemented yet.

According to the People's Committee of Khe Sanh commune, provincial road 587 passing through Van Ri village is often flooded during heavy rains, making travel difficult for people, especially during the rainy season.

After receiving feedback from local people, local authorities inspected and determined that the main cause was a temporary bridge built by a wind power company to transport equipment in 2021.

The temporary bridge abutment was washed away by the flood, leaving only the bridge body about 15m long.

After many years, the bridge abutment of this project was washed away by floodwaters, leaving only the bridge body about 15m long with 10 drainage gates. The temporary bridge is located about 0.6m downstream from the Van Ri spillway, about 40cm higher than the road surface. Due to the high bridge surface elevation, the drainage gates are small and often blocked by rubbish and mud, so the water cannot drain quickly, causing flooding and erosion of the spillway area every time it rains heavily.

Faced with this situation, the People's Committee of Khe Sanh commune has sent a document to the Department of Construction and the Traffic Maintenance Management Board of Quang Tri province, requesting to inspect and study the plan to dismantle the temporary bridge body; at the same time, recommending the province to soon arrange capital to build a solid overpass at this location to ensure traffic safety and convenience for the people.

People in Khe Sanh commune cross the spillway where there is a temporary bridge blocking the water causing very dangerous flooding.

At the meeting minutes on May 2, 2021 chaired by the Department of Transport of the former Quang Tri province (now the Department of Construction), the wind power company had committed that after completing the transportation of equipment, it would dismantle the temporary bridge and invest in building a new, solid bridge to replace it, using the unit's funding. However, to date, this commitment has not been fulfilled.

Regarding the temporary bridge project that obstructed the flow at the Van Ri village overflow, the leader of the Department of Construction of Quang Tri province said that he had assigned the specialized department to inspect and propose a solution.

The representative of Khe Sanh Commune People's Committee emphasized that Provincial Road 587 is a vital and unique route connecting remote villages of Huc Commune (old) with the center of Khe Sanh Commune, so the locality and people hope that the authorities will soon intervene and dismantle the temporary bridge to ensure safety and stabilize people's lives.
