Keep students warm
Coming to Nan Xin Kindergarten early in the morning, it is not difficult to feel the cold air coming from the surrounding mountains. However, the classrooms and bedrooms are all airtight, the doors are covered with foam, and warm blankets are neatly arranged in the drawers. Cold prevention and protection work here is prepared from the beginning of the season. Teacher Ban Thi Xuan, Principal of Nan Xin Kindergarten, said: “The school is located more than 10 km from the commune center. The climate here is harsh, winter comes early and is cold for a long time. Therefore, since October, the school has reviewed all facilities, added heating equipment, and ensured that the sleeping places for boarding students are always warm. The most important thing is to instruct the children on how to keep themselves warm to avoid common diseases in the cold season.”
Taking care of students’ health during the cold winter is a task that the Party Committee, the government and the school pay special attention to; in which the “safe winter class” activity is maintained regularly. Teachers check students’ body temperature, clothes, shoes and socks every morning; students showing signs of fatigue are monitored right at the medical room. The model is considered effective because of the close coordination between the school - medical station - parents.
Along with the government, mass organizations and volunteer groups also accompanied the school through the "winter wardrobe" model. Hundreds of coats, scarves, and shoes were given to poor students. Teacher Hoang Thi Thuong, Nan Xin Kindergarten, emotionally said: "Many children come to class barefoot and wearing thin clothes, which is very pitiful. Teachers and parents join hands to prepare more warm clothes and scarves so that the children can go to class in the best conditions."
Take care of boarding meals
In the Xin Man highlands, boarding meals play a particularly important role in keeping students healthy. Schools proactively adjust their winter menus, increasing energy-rich dishes, ensuring hot and nutritious meals. Teacher Do Van Tuyen, Principal of Chi Ca Primary Boarding School, shared: “The school currently has 242 boarding students out of a total of 473 students and has 7 school locations. The colder the weather, the more carefully we have to prepare meals. Most of the dishes are bone soup, eggs, braised meat, green vegetables and quality food.”
Thanks to the thoughtful care of meals, the rate of students suffering from respiratory diseases in winter has decreased significantly. Many parents living far away feel more secure when their children are in boarding schools. Schools have increased propaganda on keeping warm skills such as wearing many layers of clothes, limiting going out when the wind is strong, washing hands with warm water, and keeping the body dry. When the temperature drops too low, the school flexibly postpones class times, ensuring safety during the students' journey to school. Giang Mi Pao, a 5th grade student at Chi Ca Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, said: "My house is nearly 5 km from school, when it rains, going to school is very difficult; but when I go to school, I have hot food, a warm place to sleep, and teachers care, so I don't miss any classes."
According to statistics, the whole Xin Man commune has 15 schools of all levels from kindergarten to junior high school, with a total of nearly 5,000 students. The winter in the Xin Man highlands is always harsh, thanks to the care of the school, the government and the community, it has created a source of warmth spreading to each classroom. Warm clothes, hot bowls of rice, thoughtful reminders every morning... have helped students here feel secure in their studies, steadfastly overcome the cold, and continue to nurture their dreams on the border of the Fatherland.
