John Reyes and his family were cleaning out his late father-in-law's house in Los Angeles. He accidentally found a "treasure trove" of a rich collection of one million coins, under the house's basement.

He first saw a few loose coins in some old, decomposing scrolls. Following this clue, he found dozens of bags filled with coins.

Many of these bags were sealed directly from banks. Some were big banks like Bank of America. Some were banks John had never heard of, and some no longer existed.

“Well, this is a wonderful discovery,” he said.

He randomly selected three bags, took handfuls, and confirmed that they were copper coins, not zinc. They did some rough math, weighing the bags of coins and determining how much money each bag contained. Then they stopped when they felt comfortable with their estimate: at least 1 million coins.

They were so heavy and there were so many that it was difficult to get them all out of the basement. The family had to carry each bag out of the basement, up the stairs, and into the truck. The job took almost a day to complete.

At first, the family planned to exchange them for cash, but then they learned that local banks refused to accept them, so they had to change their plans.

"We live in California so it was not easy to transport all this huge amount of coins home. Meanwhile, the local bank manager told us that they do not accept it, their vault has no more space so do not bring it," said John Reyes.

John Reyes said his father-in-law, who had long been a butcher and was quite well-known in Hollywood, had a habit of buying copper pennies because he believed their value would increase over time. The coins had been sitting in his father-in-law's basement for decades without anyone touching them.

With this huge pile of coins, John believes the value lies in their uniqueness. Collectors will be interested in them. Old coins can be worth millions of dollars. In 2010, a 1943 coin sold for $1.7 million. Other rare coins have sold for thousands of dollars.

The family is now seeking expert advice on what to do next. "There are quite a few collectors who have told me this is something that should not be sold," John said.

These are not the first people to stumble upon a large coin “treasure trove.” In 2014, another California couple found $10 million worth of gold coins buried in their yard. In 2019, a North Yorkshire couple found $800,000 worth of coins under their kitchen floor.
