Nhat Quang started his journey of giving away meals in 2021, after witnessing many poor workers struggling to make a living late at night. His meaningful activity received the support of friends, many individuals and restaurant owners in Can Tho City.
Every month, he distributes rice twice, each time from 100 to 150 portions. The main source of funding comes from him, friends and benefactors. He is always transparent about his spending and posts his activities on social networks to reassure people.
Mr. Quang said that to prepare these meaningful meals, the group divided the work clearly. One person was in charge of going to the market to buy food, one person cooked rice, prepared vegetables, and one person stood in the kitchen to cook delicious meals. After that, the food was put into boxes, and at 8-9 pm, the group gathered and then assigned to spread out to all the central streets, where there were many lottery ticket vendors and poor workers, to distribute the meals.
The group members are all students and have limited funds. However, these difficulties do not stop the young people with enthusiasm from their journey of volunteering.
"I don't want people to feel like this is a charity meal, so the menu is constantly changed to ensure nutrition and suit the taste of the diners; especially, it is given with respect and love," Mr. Quang hopes.
Rain or shine, Quang still regularly sets out with hot meals, handing them to the needy with a sincere smile. "I may not be able to change anyone's life, but at least I can help them have a full meal and a warm day," Quang said.
According to Mr. Quang, after 4 years of operation, tens of thousands of meals have been given out. This activity is a valuable experience in the life journey of young people like him.
Wishing to contribute to beautifying his hometown, in 2023, Mr. Quang founded the Green Volunteer group to collect waste and beautify the environment.
The Green Volunteer Group has many community-oriented activities such as: Picking up trash to protect the environment; organizing fun activities for children at orphanages; giving gifts to poor students; participating in teaching at charity classes in the area during the summer...
When it was first established, the group had only 6 members. As the volunteer work spread, the number of members increased rapidly. To date, the group has over 800 members, mainly students from schools in Can Tho City.
Duy Linh, a student at Can Tho University of Technology, said: "I saw Quang's meaningful work so I signed up to participate. Only by going did I know that many homeless people are suffering. Giving them a meal to help them feel full and warm makes me happy because I can do something to help them."
