Artist Victor Tardieu's grandson revisits the school his grandfather founded

Ms. Alix Turolla Tardieu - granddaughter of the founder and first principal of the Indochina Fine Arts School Victor Tardieu - is 92 years old this year. Using a wheelchair, she plans to travel from Italy to attend the school's 100th anniversary celebration this weekend.

The information was announced by a representative of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts on the afternoon of November 12.

The first Victor Tardieu Prize was awarded.

Associate Professor, Doctor, painter Nguyen Nghia Phuong, representative of the school, said that a group of grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the principals and teachers of the Indochina School of Fine Arts will come from Europe to Vietnam to attend the 100th anniversary celebration of the Indochina School of Fine Arts - Vietnam University of Fine Arts, which will take place on the morning of November 15 at the school (42 Yet Kieu, Hanoi ).

In addition to Mr. Victor Tardieu's granddaughter - Mrs. Alix Turolla Tardieu accompanied by her son Giacomo Tardieu, there was also Mr. Arnaullt Fontani - great-grandson of sculptor Evariste Jonchere - second principal of the Indochina College of Fine Arts.

Mr. Phuong said that Mrs. Alix Turolla Tardieu, like the descendants of Victor Tardieu, did not pursue painting, but she greatly appreciated the special celebration of the century-long anniversary of the school her grandfather founded.

She also appreciates the way the Vietnam University of Fine Arts has continued to preserve the legacy her grandfather built.

So despite her old age and poor health, and having to use a wheelchair, she still took the long flight from Italy to Vietnam to attend the school's 100th anniversary celebration and the first Victor Tardieu award ceremony.

The school currently has about 700 students. Each year the school enrolls no more than 130 students. But usually only about 120 students are selected.

For the first time in 100 years, teachers and students of all generations gathered in an exhibition.

Regarding the 100th anniversary celebration of the Indochina University of Fine Arts - Vietnam University of Fine Arts, the school representative said that during the ceremony, the school will launch the publication of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts marking 100 years, receive certificates of merit from the Government, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism...

On this important anniversary, the school will open the entire school to the public to learn about the teaching and learning work of teachers and students, from the exhibition room, museum, sculpture studio, painting studio...

Along with the solemn celebration, on November 14, the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and a number of domestic and international units opened two large-scale exhibitions.

That is the exhibition "100 years of modern art - collection of Vietnam University of Fine Arts and Vietnam Fine Arts Museum" at Vietnam Fine Arts Museum from November 14 to 22.

The exhibition introduces 150 paintings, statues, and reliefs from the collection of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, with contributions from the A&V Foundation and the family of artist Ngo Manh Lan.

The Victor Tardieu Prize for the best graduating compositions of 2025 by students of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts will be awarded on the morning of November 14 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

This is the first time after 100 years of formation and development, through their creations, teachers and students of generations from the Indochina College of Fine Arts to the Vietnam University of Fine Arts have gathered in one exhibition.

The international exhibition titled “Vietnam University of Fine Arts and Friends” takes place from November 14 to 24 at Art Space - Vietnam University of Fine Arts, 42 Yet Kieu, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi.

This is a large-scale exhibition that has been carefully prepared with the participation of universities in the GoA9 network - Group of Asian Art Schools.
