The two units licensed to organize IELTS tests in Vietnam are IDP and the British Council. According to updated information from IDP, the IELTS Academic test fee is nearly 4.7 million VND. This is also the IELTS certificate accepted by domestic universities for admission consideration.
If candidates register for IELTS for UKVI to apply for a visa to the UK, the fee is higher, about 5.3 million VND. In addition, IELTS Life Skills - a type of UKVI test but only tests 2 skills of listening and speaking - has a fee of 4.4 million VND.
The high IELTS UKVI test fee comes from strict security requirements, closely monitored test rooms and candidate data stored according to UK Home Office standards.
IDP also announced additional fees, including a test date change fee of about 1.1 million VND, a speaking test reschedule fee of 900,000 VND, a test review fee of about 2.3 million VND, and an additional score report fee of 200,000 VND.

The British Council in Vietnam also applies similar fees.
From March 29 this year, IELTS exams will be 100% computer-based, no longer paper-based. Candidates can retake one skill to improve their total score for a fee of 2.9 million VND.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thu Ha - an IELTS test preparation teacher in Hanoi - few candidates only take the IELTS test once.
“It is common for students to take the test 2-3 times to achieve their desired IELTS score. Therefore, the average investment cost for the IELTS test alone is 9-10 million VND,” said Ms. Nguyen Thu Ha.
Currently, there are about 80 universities nationwide that consider IELTS for admission. According to the university admission regulations in 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training allows schools to convert English certificate scores to English test scores in the admission combination.
Based on this regulation, each university has a different conversion method. Most schools calculate 10 points for IELTS certificates from 8.0 and above, except for the Diplomatic Academy (only calculates 10 points for IELTS 8.5-9.0).
Hanoi University of Science and Technology calculates 10 points for IELTS from 7.0. Particularly, University of Commerce calculates 10 points for IELTS from 5.0.
There are two schools that accept IELTS certificates below 5.0: Vietnam National University of Agriculture and Hanoi Capital University.
According to the announcement of global IELTS test score data in 2023-2024, the average academic IELTS score of Vietnamese people is 6.2, ranked 29th out of 39 countries and territories surveyed, down 6 places compared to 2022-2023.
Vietnamese candidates are worst at listening and speaking, better at reading and writing. The most common IELTS score for Vietnamese candidates is 6.0. About 9% of candidates scored 7.5 and 4% scored 8.0.
