According to the decision of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2024-2025 school year, the unit assigned 127 public and self-financed public high schools to enroll 77,250 students. Specifically, 115 public high schools enroll 71,200 students, 4 specialized high schools and schools with specialized classes enroll 2,970 students, 8 self-financed public high schools enroll 3,555 students.
After having enrollment quotas, middle schools enter the stage of consulting students to choose high schools.
Comparing the enrollment targets for two consecutive years in Hanoi shows that the enrollment targets of schools are not stable, some increase, some decrease. The highest increase this year is Dong My High School, Thanh Tri District with 675 targets, last year this school recruited 405 (an increase of 270 targets). The school with the next highest increase in targets is Khuong Ha Primary - Secondary - High School, from 280 last year to 400 targets this year (an increase of 120).
In addition, the group of schools increased from 35 to 90 quotas including: Nguyen Trai High School, Tran Nhan Tong High School, Ngoc Hoi High School, Phu Xuyen B High School, Ba Vi High School, Bac Luong Son High School, My Duc C High School (increased by 90).
Da Phuc High School, Soc Son district, reduced its quota the most by 135. The group of schools that reduced their quota from 45-90 includes: Tay Ho High School; Yen Hoa High School; Cau Giay High School, Hoang Van Thu High School, Truong Dinh High School; Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Xuan Dinh High School; Vietnam - Poland High School; Tran Phu High School...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Nga, Principal of Dong My High School, said that the reason for the increase in the enrollment target for grade 10 next school year compared to last year is that in addition to the guaranteed facilities, this year the number of grade 12 students graduating is relatively large. The school enrolls grade 10 students equivalent to the number of students graduating.
Da Phuc High School, Soc Son district, has sharply reduced its enrollment quota because this year the educational institution will build a new school and will not have enough classrooms if it continues to recruit according to the same quota as last year.
In addition, 4 specialized high schools and schools with specialized classes this year were assigned by the Department of Education and Training to enroll 2,970 students, of which 3 schools increased their quotas including: Nguyen Hue High School (increased by 105 compared to last year); Son Tay High School recruited 585 students (increased by 60), Chu Van An High School recruited 935 students (increased by 220).
Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted alone recruits 820 students (an increase of 165 students and 7 more classes compared to last year). Last year, the school was only assigned to recruit 655 students for grade 10 with 560 students for the specialized program. This year, the school no longer recruits students for the non-specialized program, instead increasing the quota for specialized classes.
Hanoi has also shown its determination and toughness towards private schools by not assigning enrollment quotas to units that do not meet the requirements. The city currently has more than 100 private high schools, but only 85 schools are assigned to enroll more than 29,600 students in the coming school year. Hanoi recommends that parents rely on the list of schools assigned enrollment quotas to submit their applications, avoiding the case of "falling into the enrollment trap".
Last year, a private high school received student applications quite early, but then the school was not assigned an enrollment quota, so parents scrambled to find another private school.
Avoid "high-scoring schools"
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong, Principal of Be Van Dan Secondary School, Dong Da District (Hanoi) said that the enrollment quota of schools is very important and necessary information for parents and students to refer to in preparation for registering their wishes to apply to schools next school year. Students and parents can set enrollment quotas of recent years to compare fluctuations.
“It is very difficult to predict how many candidates will register for a public high school. However, the school and teachers will base on each student’s learning ability to advise and guide them in the safest and most beneficial direction when making their application.
"Immediately, the school will begin to implement counseling activities for students to choose their wishes to register for public high school entrance exams," said Ms. Hong.
According to the analysis of teachers with experience in 10th grade admissions consulting, the number of students applying to high schools is very important. This is one of the factors that determine the competition rate and admission scores of the schools later.
Last year, Khuong Ha High School (Thanh Xuan District) had a very large number of students applying, making the school's competition ratio the highest in the city at 1/3.55. This means that for every 4 students, only 1 student has a chance to pass the exam. However, it is important for students to assess their abilities to decide which school to apply to.
There was a story in Hanoi's 10th grade admission history where top high schools like Thang Long High School had to lower their admission scores to a very low level (from 40 points to 30 points) to meet their enrollment quota, the reason being that students avoided schools with high admission scores.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the number of public high schools increases and decreases differently, but the rate of students entering public schools must still be about 1,500 higher than the previous year. The reason some schools increase and some decrease is due to changes in physical facilities or the number of graduating seniors each year.
