According to the guidelines on teaching two sessions per day for the 2025-2026 school year issued by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, there are two cases for the content of teaching two sessions per day:
One is that the educational activities in the second session are carried out from the budget (i.e. parents do not have to pay tuition), including: Reviewing for the 10th grade entrance exam, reviewing for the high school graduation exam no more than 6 periods/week; carried out from the beginning of the school year;
Reinforce learning content to ensure students complete the curriculum; review and provide remedial instruction for students whose end-of-semester results in the subject are below par (no more than 2 lessons/subject/week; for the first grades of each level, this is implemented from the second semester of the school year; for other grades, it is implemented from the beginning of the school year); provide advanced training for gifted students in each subject (no more than 2 lessons/subject/week; implemented from the beginning of the school year until the students participate in the exam).
Second, educational activities in session 2 are carried out from socialized sources, including:
Career guidance activities, experiential learning, STEM/STEAM, life skills, digital literacy, AI, foreign languages, sports, culture, arts, and career counseling…
The activities and learning content aim to organize and implement the projects and plans of the city and the education sector.
The document of the department also clearly states: the organization of session 1, session 2, the number of periods for session 1 and the number of periods for session 2 per day and per week are flexibly arranged according to the prescribed duration, suitable and convenient for the implementation conditions of the school, students and parents.
The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City requires that when teaching 2 sessions/day, schools need to organize diverse, rich, suitable, and effective teaching methods (group study, self-study, clubs; combination in/out of class; direct, online or coordinated; coordination between school teachers and experts from social organizations, universities, businesses)...
No classes are scheduled on Saturdays.
Speaking at a conference on September 10th to provide feedback on the school's education plan for the 2025-2026 school year, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, emphasized:
" The Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that no more than 7 periods are taught per day, which means these 7 periods are used to implement the general education program. As for other subjects and educational activities, schools can balance them to teach, which means there can be more than 7 periods per day."
Also at the conference, Mr. Quoc instructed schools: "Do not schedule regular classes on Saturdays. Saturdays should be used for tutoring gifted students, providing remedial instruction for students who are struggling, organizing clubs, etc., with the active and voluntary participation of students."
