French government announces closure of embassy in Sudan

According to AFP and Reuters, on April 24, France announced the closure of its embassy in Sudan "until further notice" and will no longer serve as a gathering point for foreigners seeking to leave Sudan.

On the same day, the Swiss Foreign Ministry announced that it had closed its embassy in Khartoum and evacuated diplomatic staff and their families from Sudan.

On Twitter, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that the majority of diplomatic staff were evacuated to the Republic of Djibouti, while the rest were evacuated to Ethiopia, with the support of France.

On April 23, the main airport in the capital Khartoum was the scene of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RFS). The airport is under RSF control.

A number of evacuations are currently underway in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, about 850km from Khartoum.

In addition to the countries that announced the evacuation of their citizens in the first waves, including Saudi Arabia (more than 150 people), the US (more than 100 people), France (about 100), the UK, Italy..., Egypt recently announced that it had brought 436 citizens home safely by road.

Officials in the North African country confirmed that they had deployed security forces to the border with Sudan and were coordinating with local authorities to ensure the evacuation of citizens. Germany and Spain also announced that they had evacuated about 100 people each.

On the same day, Türkiye confirmed that it had begun a similar operation, bringing about 600 citizens home by road.

However, the plan had to be postponed in one area of ​​Khartoum after multiple explosions occurred near a mosque designated as a gathering point for those needing evacuation.

Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra confirmed that Dutch citizens were evacuated by plane from France. Another group left Khartoum by road in a UN convoy.

The Swedish Defense Ministry said it had deployed about 140-150 soldiers to evacuate its diplomatic staff and citizens from Sudan.

For his part, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that among the approximately 200 people that Rome plans to evacuate, in addition to Italian citizens, there are also Swiss citizens and representatives of the Vatican.

Greece said its first group of evacuees had left Sudan with the help of France.

Meanwhile, the Irish Foreign Ministry stated that the Irish government is deploying 12 defense personnel to Djibouti to assist 150 citizens leaving Sudan./.
