The Taiwanese company says its AI processor can write poetry and other creative works. “We want to make generative AI mainstream, benefiting a wide range of users across different industries,” said Joe Chen, president of MediaTek.
MediaTek's new chipset can handle large language models (LLMs) of up to 33 billion parameters. JC Hsu, corporate vice president and chief business officer of the company, said that upcoming smartphones will have the power to process about 7 billion parameters.
MediaTek has worked with LLMs from Meta, Baidu, and Baichuan, as well as Stable Diffusion. They also partnered for the first time with Chinese smartphone maker Vivo to launch devices with smart assistants, along with photo and video editing features.
Meanwhile, MediaTek rival Qualcomm sees “exponential growth” in mobile AI. Other chipmakers, including Intel and AMD, are also eyeing ways AI can disrupt the saturated PC industry.
Experts believe that AI generated on smartphones can be more personalized and better protect privacy, while saving time and costs compared to cloud-based technology.
With the Dimensity 9300 5G chipset, MediaTek says it has redesigned its computing core architecture, which significantly increases computing performance and reduces power consumption compared to the previous generation. The improvements are aimed at addressing the needs of flip smartphone users, such as watching streaming while browsing the web.
Many of MediaTek's key customers, including Oppo, Vivo and Transssion, have bet big on foldable handsets in hopes of energizing the smartphone market.
Qualcomm currently dominates the top-end Android smartphone segment with Samsung’s flagship models, while MediaTek has the largest mobile chip market share in the world , thriving in both the mid-range and high-end segments. However, both companies are under pressure from Huawei as the Chinese tech giant aims to return to the smartphone market.
The smartphone industry has seen a significant decline this year, with shipments expected to hit their lowest level in a decade, according to data from Counterpoint.
