Introduction to Ba Danh Pagoda
Ba Danh Pagoda, also known by its ancient name “Bao Son Nu”, is located on a peaceful land in Danh Xa village, Ngoc Son commune, Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province. About 7 km from Phu Ly city center in the direction of National Highway 21B to the Southwest, the pagoda is located in the middle of a beautiful landscape, with its back leaning on the mountain and its front facing the river – an ideal feng shui position that creates a beauty that is both peaceful and sacred.
With an area of nearly 10 hectares, Ba Danh Pagoda is considered one of the oldest and largest pagodas in Ha Nam in particular and the Northern region in general. The entire pagoda grounds are a large architectural complex, consisting of nearly 40 large and small houses, harmoniously arranged in traditional architectural style, bearing the imprint of national spiritual culture.
According to legend, this place was originally a small temple built in the 7th century to worship the Four Dharmas - four gods representing natural phenomena: Phap Van (clouds), Phap Vu (rain), Phap Loi (thunder), and Phap Dien (lightning). During the reign of King Le Huy Tong (1675–1750), the temple was rebuilt and became a major religious center in the region.
Ba Danh Pagoda was ranked as a National Historical Relic in 1994. In 2007, the People's Committee of Ha Nam province, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, invested nearly 20 billion VND to restore and upgrade the pagoda, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural and spiritual values of the relic.
The name “Ba Danh Pagoda” is also associated with a local folk legend. According to legend, the pagoda worships a sacred goddess who watches over the rain and wind, helping people dispel natural disasters, bringing favorable weather and bountiful harvests. Out of gratitude and respect, people called this place “Danh Village’s Lady Pagoda”, later shortened to Ba Danh Pagoda, as the familiar name today.
