How is IELTS certificate prioritized for admission?

After tens of thousands of IELTS certificates of licensing units were "whistled" by the Ministry of Education and Training, information about universities applying the admission method using IELTS certificates has attracted public attention.

According to records, among many universities across the country that have announced their 2024 enrollment plans, most schools apply the IELTS certificate admission method or other international language certificates with their own admission methods and criteria.

Many schools consider admission by combining IELTS test scores and academic records, while some schools only use international language certificate scores to convert into bonus points.

According to the 2024 enrollment plan of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, this year the school will use two methods for enrollment: Considering the results of the high school graduation exam and using the results of the high school graduation exam combined with international foreign language certificates.

Types of certificates that meet the minimum admission requirements of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy.

In this combined admission method, candidates need to have a valid foreign language certificate, valid until July 30, 2024, reaching the minimum level as prescribed. In particular, the minimum score for the IELTS certificate is 5.5.

In 2024, Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, will use 5 admission methods, including the international English certificate method (6% of the target). With this method, the school requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 for Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry and 5.5 for the remaining majors.

This year, Hanoi National University of Education also directly admits candidates who are students participating in excellent student teams; students from specialized high schools (or high schools under Hanoi National University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education), students with international foreign language and information technology certificates (IELTS or TOEFL iBT or TOEIC; DELF or TCF; HSK and HSKK; MOS International Information Technology certificate (valid for 2 years from May 19, 2024).

In addition, many other universities give priority to candidates with IELTS certificates such as: Foreign Trade University this year considers IELTS scores from 6.5 and above. Candidates with IELTS 6.5 certificate are converted to 8.5 points in English when considering university, 7.0 is converted to 9 points, 7.5 is equivalent to 9.5 points, 8.0 is 10 points.

National Economics University also allows candidates to use converted international English certificate scores to replace English exam scores in the admission combination. The admission score is the total score of two graduation exams plus the converted certificate score and priority points (if any).

In recent years, the IELTS certificate has become increasingly popular in Vietnam, especially in university admissions. In the 2023 admissions season, hundreds of universities have chosen this certificate as a basis for assessment in combination with academic records and high school graduation exam scores for admission.

Despite its many positive aspects, the IELTS certificate also reveals many limitations. Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training inspectors have pointed out tens of thousands of IELTS certificates organized by IDP Company and the British Council without being licensed.

Although the Ministry of Education and Training has affirmed that the rights of those with certificates will not be affected, many opinions have expressed doubts about the fairness of university admissions using international foreign language certificates.

Faced with the trend of university admissions prioritizing foreign language certificates, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, said that schools should calculate and consider that foreign language certificates are only a secondary criterion in admissions.
