(Dan Tri) - The Chinese Foreign Ministry opposes the US announcement to revoke visas for Chinese students who have connections or are studying in fields that the US government considers "sensitive".

Speaking at a press conference on May 29, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Chinese authorities had sent a diplomatic note of protest to the US side, to clearly express their views on the statement just made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Ms. Mao Ning said the US decision was unreasonable, " political and discriminatory".

Ms Mao Ning said the visa revocation could “seriously harm the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students, as well as disrupt normal cultural exchanges between the two countries”.

Ms. Mao Ning called on the US side to “protect the legitimate rights and interests of international students, including Chinese students.”

Previously, in a post on his official social media account on May 28, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he would increase screening of students from China.

Secretary of State Rubio said the US State Department will coordinate with the US Department of Homeland Security in the campaign to revoke issued visas, and will more closely review all visa applications from China in the coming time.

Currently, Chinese students make up the largest group of international students studying at American universities. Chinese students also bring in the largest source of revenue for American universities.

Therefore, Chinese students have long played an important role for universities in the US, because schools are heavily dependent on the high tuition fees that international students have to pay.

In 2024, the number of Chinese students studying in the US dropped to about 277,000, compared to a peak of about 370,000 in 2019. The main reason is the escalating tensions between the world's two largest economies and the US government's increasing scrutiny of international students.
