Pu Huong Nature Reserve, the green pearl of Western Nghe An, is a clear demonstration of the strong commitment of Vietnam and Nghe An province to the task of protecting biodiversity, responding to climate change and developing a green economy according to the direction of the Party and State.
Surrounded by rich primeval forests, Pu Huong is the common home of thousands of species of animals and plants, including many rare species recorded in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world. The protection and development of the reserve is an important political task, closely linked to the goal of sustainable development through ensuring livelihoods for local communities, gradually improving the quality of life of indigenous people.
In Pu Huong, 1,806 species and subspecies were recorded, belonging to 772 genera, 194 families of 6 different plant phyla, of which 103 species and subspecies were identified as endangered, 76 species were listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 39 species were listed in Decree 06/2019/ND-CP, 15 species were listed in the IUCN (2017) list.
Regarding animals, there are a total of 568 species, belonging to 117 families, 29 orders of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Notably, 69 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007 and 64 species are listed in Decree 32/CP in 2006.

Possessing a rich and diverse population of animals and plants, Pu Huong special-use forest is always in the "crosshairs" of many elements and subjects with bad intentions. From that reality, it requires forest owners to uphold their responsibilities, assign specialized departments to closely monitor developments, thereby promptly grasping, detecting and handling violations.
With a system of 7 forest protection management stations spread throughout the area, forest monitoring and patrolling work is strictly implemented, ensuring the sustainability of the ecosystem. Besides the key role of the Pu Huong Nature Reserve Management Board, the positive contributions of 135 villages and hamlets with more than 13,700 households living in the surrounding area cannot be overlooked, they have established a solid "belt" surrounding the entire golden forest system.
