Established in 1995, Pu Mat National Park (NP) is assigned to manage 93,127 hectares of special-use forest. Located in the north of Truong Son mountain range, the geographical bridge between the North and South, Pu Mat NP is an area with very high biodiversity in Vietnam.

Regarding flora, the entire Pu Mat National Park has 2,691 recorded species. Of which, 75 are endangered, precious and rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007; 77 are endangered, precious and rare species listed in the IUCN Red List 2022; 188 are listed in Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP; 02 are listed in Appendix I of Decree No. 64/2019/ND-CP and 170 are listed in the CITES Convention.
Regarding fauna, a total of 132 species of mammals, 343 species of birds, 51 species of amphibians, 63 species of reptiles, 119 species of fish and 1,198 species of insects have been recorded. Through classification, there are 93 endangered, precious and rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007, 135 species listed in the IUCN Red List 2022, 122 species listed in Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP, 43 species listed in Decree No. 64/2019/ND-CP and 99 species listed in the CITES Convention. In particular, the Park has a 61km boundary adjacent to the Nam Chouane - Nam Xang Biodiversity Compensation Area (Bolikhamxay province - Laos), from which a large biodiversity conservation population is formed in the ASEAN region.

Pu Mat National Park has long been known as one of the three most important core areas of the Western Nghe An World Biosphere Reserve, where many natural and cultural values are combined. Over the years, Pu Mat National Park has performed well its functions and tasks of conserving forest ecosystems and biodiversity, especially the conservation of endangered, precious and rare species of animals and plants.
The Party Committee and Board of Directors of Pu Mat National Park have identified forest protection management and environmental education as key tasks, throughout the process of construction and general development. Therefore, in the past term, they have focused on leadership and direction to ensure the goal of stably protecting forest capital within the assigned management scope.
The park has organized 805 propaganda sessions, attracting 77,295 participants in forest patrol work; organized 3,224 forest sweeps and patrols (an increase of 727 compared to the previous term) with 6,999 forest rangers (an increase of 2,146), 8,464 people and other forces participating (an increase of 2,859 people)...

Along with that, the Park has effectively carried out scientific research activities, rescue and release of wild animals back into the wild. Promoting the values of biodiversity, biological genetic resources, cultural, historical and landscape values to educate the environment and develop ecotourism. This opens up opportunities for cooperation, attracting domestic and foreign investment in nature conservation, creating livelihoods for indigenous people, making an important contribution to the implementation of the Government's National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction.
