After receiving a free eye examination, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai (Suoi Dau commune) shared that although one eye has been blurred for a long time, she has never had it examined. Doctors diagnosed her with cataracts and needed surgery to make her eyes brighter. She said she would arrange time to have an eye examination and surgery. "This activity is very meaningful for the elderly because not everyone can afford to go to a specialized hospital. People are very happy to have a doctor come to their home to examine them," Ms. Mai shared. Sharing the same sentiment, Mr. Le Van Con (Suoi Dau commune) said that this was the first time he had an eye examination right in the locality, and it was free, so he hopes there will be more activities like this so that the elderly can have better eye care.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Ha - Head of Customer Care and Development Department, Saigon - Nha Trang Eye Hospital, this is an annual activity carried out by the hospital in coordination with the Provincial Elderly Association on the occasion of the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam. From now until the end of October, the Organizing Committee will continue to examine the eyes of the elderly in Cam Linh ward and Dien Lam commune with an expected number of about 400 people. In addition to measuring vision and examining eyes, doctors will advise and provide free medicine for the elderly.
Caring for the elderly
In the southern region of the province, in October, the Provincial Elderly Association coordinated with the Ophthalmology Center, Saigon - Phan Rang General Hospital to organize eye examinations and provide free medicine for about 2,000 elderly people belonging to 36 intergenerational self-help clubs in communes and wards. In addition, the association also organized longevity celebrations and gave gifts to support about 1,000 elderly people. At the same time, it launched the elderly to participate in building the political system at the grassroots level, contributing to environmental protection, building cultural families, villages, cultural residential areas of the locality, building new rural areas and civilized urban areas...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh - President of the Provincial Elderly Association said that, implementing the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam in 2025, in addition to activities to care for the material and spiritual life, the Provincial Elderly Association has closely coordinated with localities to promote social mobilization to join hands in taking care of the health of the elderly, especially vision care - one of the issues that greatly affects the quality of life of the elderly. The implementation of the program "Bright eyes for the elderly" has brought many positive results. Localities and medical units have organized eye examinations, consultations, and provided free medicine for thousands of elderly people. For cases indicated for cataract surgery, doctors will directly advise and guide appropriate treatment plans, ensuring convenience and safety for patients. This is not only a practical activity to care for health but also demonstrates the deep concern of all levels, sectors and the whole society for the elderly.
