Persistently implementing green tourism
Hoi An continues to affirm its global appeal when it is continuously honored in many prestigious rankings such as: World's Best Awards 2025 organized by Travel and Leisure magazine, ranked 6th in the top 25 ideal destination cities in the world and 5th in the top 15 cities in Asia; Forbes magazine (USA) honored in "50 most beautiful villages in the world 2025"...
The charm of Hoi An lies not only in its rich cultural heritage but also in the variety of experiences it offers to visitors. This is also a locality that has approached sustainable tourism trends quite early, including green tourism. For example, the initiative of "saying no to plastic bags" in Cu Lao Cham (Tan Hiep commune) since 2009, the model of "Hotel without plastic waste" that discharges into the environment and no longer has disposable plastic products; promulgating a set of green tourism criteria...
In recent years, Da Nang has focused on developing unique eco-tourism products in Son Tra, combining nature experiences with environmental education such as watching douc langurs, trekking, boating, sports tourism, participating in environmental protection activities, implementing management plans, protecting corals... The goal is to make Son Tra a typical destination for Vietnam's green tourism model, contributing to positioning the brand "Da Nang - city of sea tourism, festivals and green creativity".
Recently, in July, the Quang Nam Tourism Association (now Da Nang Tourism Association) in collaboration with the Pacific Environment Organization Vietnam (PE-VN) launched the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network to open the next stage in the journey to promote effective waste management at the business and destination levels, towards the goal of sustainable tourism development.
Ms. Quach Thi Xuan, Country Director of the Pacific Environment Organization Vietnam, said: “The establishment of the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network is a strong step forward, a strategic action, focusing on Vietnam’s strengths and the areas that generate a lot of disposable plastic waste. Thereby, preventing plastic waste, building and preserving the “green destination” brand, ensuring sustainable tourism development.”

Building a long-term strategy
After the merger, many experts, managers, and tourism businesses are particularly interested in the development orientation of green tourism and sustainable tourism in Da Nang city based on the inherited results. In 2021, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (old) issued the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria Set, built with the support of the Swiss Tourism Project for sustainable tourism development in Vietnam. To date, 33 businesses and destinations in Quang Nam (old) have been certified to meet the standards according to this set of criteria.
Mr. Van Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that the department strongly supports the continued implementation of the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria into the new Da Nang city tourism space. The department also proposed that the city allow the unit to continue cooperating with the Swiss sustainable tourism development program to carry out green tourism project activities approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In particular, the department will preside over and coordinate with localities to participate in survey and evaluation activities on the application and practice of green tourism according to the criteria issued by the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (old)...
On the business community side, Mr. Cao Tri Dung, Chairman of the Da Nang City Tourism Association, said that the association always accompanies and creates conditions for businesses and travel agencies to develop sustainably. In the near future, the association will upgrade the Quang Nam Green Tourism Club (old) to the Da Nang City Green Tourism Association. This is the core force to implement many meaningful activities and solutions towards the goal of reducing waste, gradually moving towards the goal of zero waste.
According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the period 2026 - 2030 will be a period of strong recovery and transformation of Vietnam tourism, focusing on green development, technology application, product diversification and service quality improvement.
As for Da Nang, the National Tourism Administration identified this as the hub of the Central Coast region, with a strategic location, possessing a rich natural and cultural ecosystem, connecting many world heritages. It is recommended that Da Nang focus on environmental protection and green tourism development, considering Son Tra as a key area to implement a climate change adaptation tourism model, preserving coral reefs, forest and marine ecosystems. At the same time, it is necessary to establish a conservation area, control waste, and limit overexploitation...
