Persistently implement green tourism.
Hoi An continues to affirm its global appeal by consistently being honored in many prestigious rankings such as: the World's Best Awards 2025 organized by Travel and Leisure magazine, ranking 6th among 25 top ideal travel destinations in the world and 5th among 15 top cities in Asia; and Forbes magazine (USA) recognizing it in the "50 most beautiful villages in the world 2025"…
Hoi An's charm lies not only in its rich cultural heritage but also in the diverse experiences it offers visitors. It's also a locality that embraced sustainable tourism trends quite early, including green tourism. Examples include the "say no to plastic bags" initiative in Cu Lao Cham (Tan Hiep commune) since 2009, the "Plastic-Free Hotel" model that eliminates single-use plastics, and the issuance of green tourism criteria.
Over the years, Da Nang has focused on developing unique ecotourism products in Son Tra, combining nature experiences with environmental education such as observing langurs, trekking, boating, sports tourism, participating in environmental protection activities, and implementing coral reef management and protection plans. The goal is to make Son Tra a typical destination for Vietnam's green tourism model, contributing to positioning the brand "Da Nang - a city of green tourism, festivals, and creativity."
Recently, in July, the Quang Nam Tourism Association (now the Da Nang City Tourism Association), in collaboration with the Pacific Environment Organization Vietnam (PE-VN), launched the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network to open the next phase in the journey to promote effective waste management at the enterprise and destination levels, aiming for sustainable tourism development.
Ms. Quach Thi Xuan, Country Director of the Pacific Environment Organization Vietnam, stated: “The launch of the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network is a significant step forward, a strategic action focusing on Vietnam’s strengths and areas that generate a large amount of single-use plastic waste. Through this, we aim to prevent plastic waste, build and maintain the brand of a “green destination,” and ensure sustainable tourism development.”

Develop a long-term strategy.
Following the merger, many experts, managers, and tourism businesses have shown particular interest in orienting the development of green and sustainable tourism in Da Nang city, building upon the achievements already made. In 2021, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (formerly) issued the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria, developed with the support of the Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Tourism Development Project in Vietnam. To date, 33 businesses and destinations in the former Quang Nam province have been certified as meeting these criteria.
Mr. Van Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that the department strongly supports the continued implementation of the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria in the new tourism space of Da Nang city. The department also proposed that the city allow the unit to continue cooperating with the Swiss sustainable tourism development program to carry out activities of the green tourism project approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In this regard, the department will preside over and coordinate with localities to participate in surveying and evaluating the application and practice of green tourism according to the criteria sets issued by the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (formerly)...
On the business community's side, Mr. Cao Tri Dung, Chairman of the Da Nang City Tourism Association, stated that the association always supports and creates favorable conditions for businesses and travel companies to develop sustainably. In the near future, the association will upgrade the former Quang Nam Green Tourism Club into the Da Nang City Green Tourism Branch. This will be a core force to implement many meaningful activities and solutions aimed at minimizing waste and gradually moving towards a zero-waste goal.
According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, the period from 2026 to 2030 will be a time of strong recovery and transformation for Vietnamese tourism, focusing on green development, technology application, product diversification, and service quality improvement.
Specifically for Da Nang, the National Tourism Administration identifies it as the hub of the Central Coastal region, possessing a strategic location, rich natural and cultural ecosystems, and connecting to many world heritage sites. It recommends that Da Nang focus on environmental protection and green tourism development, considering Son Tra as a key area for implementing a tourism model that adapts to climate change, conserves coral reefs, and preserves forest and marine ecosystems. Simultaneously, it is necessary to establish conservation areas, control waste, and limit overexploitation...
