Digital transformation in businesses: Many difficulties remain

Báo Khánh HòaBáo Khánh Hòa09/05/2023

Currently, the implementation of digital transformation in enterprises still faces many difficulties, stemming from many causes, including awareness. The solution to this problem, in addition to the leading role of the State, is that enterprises need to raise awareness and build a digital transformation strategy.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tri Huy - Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Provincial Informatics Association, digital transformation is a global issue. However, Vietnamese enterprises in general, especially small and medium enterprises, are not yet ready for digital transformation. Specifically, according to the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), currently, Vietnamese small and medium enterprises account for about 97% of the total number of enterprises, the level of science, technology and innovation is still low, with 80% to 90 % of machinery used in Vietnamese enterprises being imported, nearly 80% being old technology from the 1980s - 1990s. The reason for the slow digital transformation in enterprises is due to many challenges from technology, capital to awareness. Digital transformation is the application of technology to all business activities, so it requires a very high level of technical and human resources. Meanwhile, investing in digital transformation requires large capital and has a great impact on business strategy and business operations, but managers are still concerned about its effectiveness.

In 2021, the Provincial Party Committee issued   Resolution 16 on provincial digital transformation for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, focuses on three contents: developing digital government, digital economy and digital society. The Provincial People's Committee also issued a plan for provincial digital transformation for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030. Accordingly, the province sets higher goals than the national average, such as: Striving to have 100% of level 4 online public services provided on various access devices by 2025, including mobile devices, while the national target is 80%; 100% of state agencies in the province and over 50% of small and medium enterprises in the province move to digital platforms, while the national target does not yet exist; the proportion of the province's population with smartphones reaches over 80%.

In fact, in Khanh Hoa and Vietnam, before the Covid-19 pandemic, many stages in business operations had applied digital technology , such as: Electronic payment in purchasing or selling; using social networks in marketing campaigns; warehouse management software, delivery in logistics activities; cloud computing services in internal administration or e-commerce in sales... When the Covid-19 pandemic appeared, with limited contact and the implementation of social distancing measures, businesses were forced to adapt more to digital technologies. In some activities, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused the rate of businesses applying digital technologies to be almost as high as the rate of businesses that had applied them for a long time before, specifically in remote human resource management, online conferences, online learning, internal approval...

According to Mr. Huy, to promote digital transformation in enterprises, the State needs to continue to build and perfect legal institutions to meet the requirements of digital economic development; announce industry planning on the development and application of information technology. On that basis, issue standards for information exchange between agencies and units to create connections and synchronization in the process of investment and infrastructure development based on information technology application. On the other hand, in the coming time, it is necessary to continue to develop digital infrastructure, especially deploying 5G mobile networks; form and organize the coordination of a network of digital transformation consultants for enterprises; support training and digital transformation consulting for enterprises; support the application of technology solutions for production and business establishments. On the enterprise side, first of all, it is necessary to come up with ideas and have a digital transformation strategy in line with business goals. When the ideas, strategies and people are ready, then start focusing on investing in technology. Enterprises need to apply digital technology to gradually connect existing systems into a seamless information system from business to administrative operations in the enterprise; build a common database throughout the enterprise; apply new digital technology to ensure information security and network security for enterprise data...
