Last night and this morning (April 25), many areas in the North had heavy to very heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with continuous thunder and lightning.
Rainfall from 7pm on April 24 to 8am on April 25 was over 80mm in some places such as: Mo Vang (Yen Bai) 93.6mm, Yen Minh (Ha Giang) 82.6mm, Vinh Bao (Hai Phong City) 120.2mm, Tien Phong (Hai Duong) 116.4mm, Dong Hai (Thai Binh) 156.8mm, Thanh Tri ( Hanoi City) 93.4mm, Hai Trieu (Hung Yen) 91.8mm...
Lightning strikes are mainly concentrated in provinces such as Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Ha Giang , Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hanoi..., and the Gulf of Tonkin.
Mr. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that this is a weather phenomenon that often occurs in the North during the transitional season from late March to May.
Explaining why last night and early this morning, lightning continuously struck the ground and lightning in the clouds on land, at sea and in areas adjacent to Vietnam, Mr. Khiem said: "The impact and influence of weak cold air masses meeting hot and humid air masses creates strong atmospheric instability leading to thunderstorms."
Vietnam has a lot of lightning because it is located in the center of the Asian thunderstorm region - one of three thunderstorm centers in the world . The average number of thunderstorm days in our country is 100, the average number of hours is 250 per year. The whole country receives up to 2 million lightning strikes per year.
Not only thunderstorms with lightning, on April 24, many communes in Meo Vac district (Ha Giang) also experienced hail lasting 10-20 minutes, with hailstones as big as eggs and plums, causing many houses to have their roofs punctured and gardens to be destroyed.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on April 25, the rain in the North decreased rapidly, only occurring in a few places. In the afternoon and evening of the same day, the Central Highlands and the South had scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with common rainfall of 10-30mm, some places over 60mm. During thunderstorms, people need to be on guard against extreme weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
From May to July, moderate to heavy rains are likely to continue to occur in the North, North Central, Central Highlands and South.
Nationwide, dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind may occur, especially during cold spells during the transitional season, negatively affecting production activities and public health.
During these 3 months, the possibility of storms or tropical depressions operating in the East Sea and affecting our country is approximately the average of many years (in the East Sea: 3.2 storms, making landfall: 1.2 storms).
According to a quick report from the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the provinces and cities of Ha Giang, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Hue, and Quang Ngai, heavy rain with thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and hail on April 23-24 injured one person in Nghe An. 21 houses collapsed (Nghe An 6, Quang Ngai 15); 328 houses were damaged, roofs blown off (Ha Giang 80, Nghe An 129, Quang Binh 12, Hue 27, Quang Ngai 80). |
