What do experts say about the claim that 'blood filtration helps remove bad blood, preventing strokes'?

GĐXH – Believing advertisements that dialysis can remove blood fat and bad blood, helping to prevent stroke, many people are willing to spend a considerable amount of money to undergo the procedure. However, experts warn that there are no recommendations for preventative dialysis, and even abusing this method poses many potential risks.


Many advertisements tout the benefits of dialysis in preventing various diseases.

Recently, many posts advertising blood filtration services to remove bad blood and high cholesterol, and prevent strokes , have appeared on social media. Simply searching for phrases like "blood cholesterol filtration" or "blood filtration for stroke prevention" yields numerous results with exaggerated claims about the miraculous effects of this method.

There are claims like "filters bad blood, restoring clean blood; in just 2 hours, it rescues the body from dangerous complications of high blood lipids; directly removes fat in the blood (bad cholesterol), eliminates inflammatory substances and waste products in the blood," and then "blood filtration helps prevent blood clots and plaque buildup in blood vessels; prevents stroke, cerebral vascular accident, myocardial infarction…".

These enticing advertisements have led many people to willingly spend considerable sums of money on dialysis in the hope of achieving the aforementioned benefits.

From a professional standpoint, many healthcare professionals have spoken out on this issue.

There are no recommendations for prophylactic hemodialysis.

Regarding the situation where many facilities claim that simply dialysis can remove not only blood fat but also bad blood, thus preventing stroke, atherosclerosis, diabetes, fatty liver disease, etc., Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu, Director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital, emphasized on his personal page: " If just 2-3 hours and a cost of less than ten million VND could prevent stroke, and eliminate blood fat and diabetes... then cardiologists like me would be out of a job ."

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu, a truly effective method will be included in the guidelines of professional associations, but so far there are no recommendations for preventive hemodialysis.

Dialysis is indicated when treatment is necessary, meaning when a definitive diagnosis of a disease has been made. This is a very effective method that saves the lives of many patients with conditions such as kidney failure, heart failure, severe infections, and acute pancreatitis.

" If you're going abroad for body detoxification, you should also ask if the host country covers this preventative method with insurance. The answer is definitely no. So, don't waste money and effort on an 'invasive' procedure whose effectiveness hasn't been clearly proven ," the Director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital advised.

Beware of "losing money and suffering harm."

Also sharing his views on this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Do Gia Tuyen, Head of the Department of General Internal Medicine, Hanoi Medical University, said that currently, in Vietnam, there are no guidelines or indications for lipid-lowering to treat or prevent stroke.

Current blood lipid filtration techniques are only indicated and applied to cases of acute pancreatitis accompanied by elevated triglyceride levels. For normal individuals, elevated blood lipid levels without clinical symptoms do not require dialysis.

" Blood filtration to prevent stroke, as advertised or advised by some medical facilities, is unreasonable and lacks sufficient scientific basis. Therefore, people need to be cautious and should not believe advertisements or misuse blood lipid filtration, as it can be very dangerous ," Associate Professor Dr. Do Gia Tuyen shared.

This expert analyzed that the misuse of dialysis is very dangerous and can even lead to life-threatening complications for patients due to the risk of dialysis-related complications such as: dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, hypotension, chest pain, back pain, cramps, fever, allergic reaction to the dialysis tubing, anaphylactic shock, blood loss due to bleeding, arrhythmias and cardiac arrest, bleeding due to the use of anticoagulants, stroke during and after dialysis, and infection of the blood vessel entrance…

With plasma exchange or filtration techniques, patients also risk allergic reactions or even anaphylactic shock to the plasma or albumin solution transfused during the dialysis process.

Furthermore, many experts have emphasized that hemodialysis in general, and lipid-lowering dialysis in particular, are highly specialized treatments requiring modern equipment, a team of highly qualified and well-trained medical staff, and should be performed in large hospitals or specialized hospitals with hemodialysis units and intensive care units.

These are crucial factors in ensuring patient safety. Therefore, patients should not undergo these procedures at regular clinics or medical facilities to avoid wasting money and suffering further harm.

Some habits to prevent high cholesterol.

- You should eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and unprocessed foods; lean meat or skinless poultry; fatty fish (rich in oil) at least twice a week; use vegetable oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil; and drink skim milk.

- It is advisable to limit animal fats, fatty meats, animal offal (liver, kidneys, brain, spleen, etc.); fried foods, fast food, egg yolks, butter, fatty cheeses, and foods made from them.

- Avoid using vegetable oils high in saturated fats such as coconut oil, palm oil, almond oil, and margarine, and full-fat (whole cream) milk.

- Exercise for at least 30 minutes regularly every day.

- Quit smoking, avoid alcohol, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid being overweight or obese.
