As Director of the Stroke Center, with the support and facilitation of the Board of Directors of Bach Mai Hospital, headed by Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co - Director of the Hospital, Professor, Dr. Mai Duy Ton is the one who not only built an international standard stroke center, but also created a widespread stroke emergency network, bringing the "golden hour" closer to millions of people across the country.
Vietnam Stroke Network Builder
The main line of work is the "ground" where Professor Mai Duy Ton sowed the most important seeds for the sustainable development of the stroke specialty.

As Director of the Stroke Center, he proactively turned the unit into a "locomotive" in the line command system. Hundreds of training courses and technical transfer courses were organized for provincial and district hospitals, from Ha Giang , Dien Bien to Thanh Hoa, Quang Ninh.
Many lower-level doctors shared that, thanks to the support of Bach Mai Center, they can handle complex stroke cases that previously could only be transferred to higher-level hospitals. He is also an active member in the process of compiling national professional documents, coordinating with the Ministry of Health to develop "Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of cerebral stroke", creating a foundation for standardized treatment nationwide. This is the core document for a unified, modern and transparent treatment system.
Bringing "golden hour" to remote areas
For Professor Mai Duy Ton, standardizing quality at the central level is never enough. His aspiration is to shorten the survival gap between the upper and lower levels.

In many remote areas, the golden time was often missed. But thanks to the well-established stroke network, thousands of patients have been saved in the shortest possible time. He strongly promoted the establishment of stroke units in the provinces, even at the regional level (formerly district level), where the treatment capacity was very limited before. Regional - district level health care such as in Ha Giang, Mong Cai or many other mountainous facilities can now perform standard stroke emergency procedures. He not only inspired but also passed on his profession, bringing specialized techniques and updating the latest protocols to each online team below.
Each training course, each hands-on experience is a step forward in helping local doctors become more confident in handling life-threatening cases. This multi-layered system has created a “revolution”, making the seemingly impossible possible: patients in the highlands no longer have to travel hundreds of kilometers to have a chance of survival.
Always dedicated to training
With a strategic vision, Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton does not consider his mission limited to the premises of Bach Mai Hospital. He has devoted all his efforts to cultivating a complete stroke "ecosystem" across the country. He actively participates and contributes his intelligence to the development of standard guidelines (professional instructions), becoming a compass for doctors from central to local levels.
When it comes to his achievements, Professor Mai Duy Ton always takes credit for the collective. He sees himself as just a "link" in a large machine including the Ministry of Health, the Board of Directors of Bach Mai Hospital, coordinating departments and all the staff of the Stroke Center.
He often said that his joy did not come from awards but from the grateful eyes of the patients who were saved, from the maturity of the young doctors, from the fact that the Vietnamese stroke network is increasingly expanding and becoming stronger. In the story of building the Vietnamese stroke system, Professor Mai Duy Ton is the one who paved the way, built the foundation, set the standards and inspired.
From professional work, international process standardization, to long business trips to highland areas, all are aimed at one goal: not to let any stroke patient miss the chance to live just because of geography or medical limitations. Thanks to those persistent efforts, Vietnam today has a worthy position on the world stroke map, and millions of people everywhere have had more chances to live.
