Teacher locked up: This is not the first time students have 'rebelled'

Tuyen Quang: Ms. Hang said that the student had been "disobedient during class" for the past two months, and the parent said he did not defend her but also accused her of beating his child.

Speaking to VnExpress at her home, 8 days after being locked in the classroom by students, swearing and throwing things at her, Ms. Hang, 38 years old, said "there is no problem with the students". According to Ms. Hang, during the music class on November 29, the students did not follow the rules and their duties. It was time for class but they were free to move around, play music and dance on the podium. Ms. Hang could not remind them so she unplugged the TV. A student then went up and plugged it in, turned on the music and cheered.

"In short, the students did not study and rebelled," said Ms. Hang, who was then forced into a corner as recorded in a nearly two-minute video .

"The students also surrounded me at the teacher's desk, holding hats and sweaters, waving them in front of me, wanting to cover my head. Some even held rulers, leaned them on the ground and threatened me," Ms. Hang said.

Ms. Hang then went to class 6A to teach the fourth period. After the period ended, some students from class 7C came over and stuffed trash into her bag. When she walked from the podium to the classroom door, the group of students threw papers and slippers.

"I felt so dizzy that I fainted," said Ms. Hang.

Explaining the video of her chasing students with clogs, Ms. Hang said that after waking up, she told them to disperse but they did not listen. Some students were "teasing and provoking" her, so she picked up her shoes to scare them, not to hit anyone.

"Since the end of the second semester of last school year, some students in class 7C, then 6C, started to show disrespect for teachers. The situation of opposition, not studying, and throwing sandals during my class has been going on for about the past two months," said Ms. Hang, adding that she had reported to the principal many times but nothing had been done.

Ms. Huong, the mother of the 7C class boy who wore a black shirt and used a stainless steel chair to hit the teacher, said she would not defend the student when he was "rude and the students were in chaos". She and her family were ready to accept any form of discipline, including suspension from school. However, she said that the incident should be viewed from both sides and the question of why the student reacted that way to the teacher.

Ms. Huong said that before the incident, her son had no conflict with Ms. Hang. But while the teacher was swinging her clogs around and chasing the students, Ms. Huong's son was hit twice in the back and once in the hand.

"The teacher hit her so she resisted like that," said Ms. Huong, adding that she took her child to the Van Phu commune health station for examination on November 29, the result was "soft tissue injuries on the left hand and both shoulders."

According to the parent, she filed a complaint about the incident with the school principal, the chairman and the police of Van Phu commune. Ms. Huong said she "felt upset" because the school did not communicate anything after the incident.

"According to my conscience, Ms. Hang needs to transfer from Van Phu Secondary School. Otherwise, many more children will be affected in the future," she said.

In addition to Ms. Huong, some parents said they had filed a petition in October, complaining about Ms. Hang’s behavior and ethics. Principal Nguyen Duy Sang confirmed that he had received the petition from two parents, one of whom sent the petition to the district People’s Committee. After this petition, Van Phu Secondary School installed cameras in classrooms.

Mr. Sang assessed Ms. Hang's expertise as "moderate". The incident on November 29th took place when he was not present at school because he had to submit a report.

"At the end of class, I saw Ms. Hang go down to the room, said everything was normal, then left, and was in good health. The next day, I didn't see her come to class so I called her and she said she was sick and asked for leave. It wasn't until the afternoon of the same day that she sent a complaint about the incident," said Mr. Sang.

Regarding Ms. Hang’s personality and behavior towards her colleagues and students, Mr. Sang said he would not share because the authorities were working on it. According to the decision of the People’s Committee of Son Duong district, Mr. Sang was suspended from work and position for 15 days, starting from December 7, to serve the investigation.

Ms. Hang hopes that the matter will be resolved clearly between the three parties: the school, the teacher, and the student's family, "whoever is at fault will have to take responsibility." She said she is willing to accept if the authorities determine that she is at fault and suspend her from work.

As for the students, the teacher acknowledged that they were still young and not old enough to go to reform school, so it was even more inappropriate to let them stay home from school because they could fall into vices.

"If the authorities are lenient and forgive the students, I will forgive them too. There's no need to be stressed," said Ms. Hang.

After the incident, the teacher said she was "not ashamed or humiliated and did nothing wrong, but felt sad" and "still scared" about entering class 7C. During her class on Monday, Ms. Hang said class 7C was basically well-behaved, but some students were still naughty.

"Maybe I will apply to transfer schools," said Ms. Hang.

Over the past three days, the incident of a female teacher in Tuyen Quang being locked in the classroom by students, cursed at, stuffed with trash, and having things thrown at her has attracted great public attention.

According to the People's Committee of Son Duong district, the incident took place at 10:30 am on November 29. When the music class in class 7C started, some students asked to leave but Ms. Hang did not agree. After that, "a conflict arose between the teacher and the students". After the class ended, the teacher switched to teaching class 6A, some students from class 7C went over, used foul language, insulted, recorded a video and posted it on Facebook.

The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the act of students locking a teacher in the classroom, cursing and throwing things at her was a serious violation of ethics, causing public outrage. Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son on December 6 acknowledged the incident as "very serious and unacceptable", but emphasized the need for an objective and thorough assessment to find a suitable solution.

In a report sent to the Ministry on December 7, the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province said that the behavior of some students in the incident was "inappropriate and disrespectful to teachers". The People's Committee of Son Duong district is coordinating with the Department of Education and Training to clarify the level of violations by students and teachers to handle them according to regulations.

The Ministry of Education and Training requested Tuyen Quang province to announce the results before December 29.
