Promising market for international concerts
Recently, Vietnamese social networks have been buzzing with the news that BLACKPINK will return to Vietnam to perform in 2024. Accordingly, the performance plan of the world- famous girl group in Vietnam has been scheduled with a specific time, the organizers will soon announce to fans.
The news that BLACKPINK will once again come to Vietnam has excited many music lovers. Previously, in July 2023, they had two shows at My Dinh Stadium ( Hanoi ), attracting more than 60,000 spectators, bringing in record revenue (estimated at more than 300 billion VND). This event shows the potential of the performance industry in Vietnam, as well as opening up many expectations for the regular appearance of international concerts in Vietnam in the coming years.

In addition to BLACKPINK's concert, many concerts by other international artists in 2023 also attracted public attention. That is The Wild Dreams Tour by Westlife to Ho Chi Minh City at the end of November. The event includes 2 shows attracting an estimated 30,000 spectators. Previously, in March, Super Junior's concert also attracted more than 15,000 people to Military Zone 7 Stadium, Ho Chi Minh City. The fancon (a combination of fan meeting and concert) of the sub-group Super Junior D&E at Phu Tho Stadium (Ho Chi Minh City) in September had 5,000 attendees. BamBam's concert (GOT7 member) in Ho Chi Minh City attracted 3,500 spectators. Many experts predict that by 2024, a series of international artists, especially Korean ones, will choose Vietnam as a destination.
Sharing with PV Dan Viet , Mr. Bonor Seen, Director of Born Pink Hanoi project, expressed his hope to bring more international-class shows of big artists to Vietnam after the success of BLACKPINK: "I believe that concerts like "Born Pink" are a good event for promoting the economy, tourism activities at the destination, promoting national culture or enhancing the brand image of the city in particular and the country in general on the map of the entertainment industry. Because, attending the concert, there are not only domestic fans, but also many experts, artists, fans from many countries in the region... also arrange time, book tickets to that country, both enjoy the enthusiastic atmosphere of the event and visit and travel. We are trying our best to have similar events next year".

The lack of professionalism in a young market
Despite many successes, 2023 also showed shortcomings in organizing international concerts, with a series of unnecessary scandals.
Although highly appreciated for the staging of the two shows, the BLACKPINK concert raised many questions about the ticket pricing method, when Vietnamese audiences had to pay the highest ticket prices in Asia. In addition, the controversy over performance licenses and the illegal "cow tongue line" appearing on the organizer's website also raised new requirements for censorship by authorities, in the context of the increasingly developing performance industry.

The unprofessionalism of the organizers also became a major obstacle in bringing audiences to the concerts. During the two nights of Westlife's performances, many problems with the organization occurred. Accordingly, on the first night, the technical tent area almost blocked the view, causing a number of audiences with tickets priced at 2,100,000 VND to not be able to see the stage. Faced with this situation, many people expressed their indignation and continuously called on the organizers to refund their tickets. The situation was only resolved when the staff placed chairs on the stage and moved the audience to a new location.
After the show, some viewers reported receiving promotional items printed with the logo of an online betting website when watching the Westlife show. This controversy made netizens angry, criticizing the organizers for advertising for illegal entities.
At the end of December, the show called X-mas Festival at My Dinh Stadium attracted a lot of attention from the audience when announcing the lineup of famous artists participating in the performance, including a series of famous K-pop stars such as: Kim Jae Joong, Highlight group, MAMAMOO+, Nickhun and famous singers in Vietnamese showbiz such as Toc Tien, Duc Phuc, Chi Pu, Tang Duy Tan... Although it was promoted as the most magnificent K-pop music night in Vietnam, this program later encountered a series of controversies, from the highest ticket price of up to 15 million VND, to the subsequent organization stages.
On December 22, just one day before the show was scheduled to take place, the program's organizers suddenly announced the cancellation of the event. Accordingly, the producer decided to stop preparations because they could not meet all the requirements of an international concert, and would refund tickets to the audience. Faced with this situation, many fans were both "crying and laughing" because they had booked plane tickets and hotels to attend the program. K-pop artists also took turns posting, saying that they were extremely shocked when they received the information from the organizers.
The above reality shows that in recent years, Vietnamese audiences have changed a lot when they have become more "willing to spend" on tickets to cultural and artistic events. However, in order for international concerts to be organized successfully and regularly, we still have a lot to do. Besides the support of the authorities, the awareness of the professionalism of the organizers, the conditions of the stadium, sound and light must all be strengthened. Only then can the view of the performing arts industry in Vietnam in the eyes of international entertainment companies and artists change.
