The national product and goods traceability portal officially came into operation in October 2024, marking an important step forward in traceability management in Vietnam; bringing many benefits to management agencies, businesses and consumers.

According to Mr. Bui Ba Chinh - Acting Director of the National Code and Barcode Center (a unit assigned by the National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality, Ministry of Science and Technology to build and operate the Information Portal), the issue of product traceability is gradually becoming a non-tariff barrier. As tariff barriers are increasingly reduced by free trade agreements, non-tariff barriers will tend to develop and strengthen. Traceability is also gradually becoming such a barrier and is an inevitable trend to protect the rights of consumers.

Officially put into operation since October 2024, the National Origin Traceability Portal has had thousands of units, businesses and localities participating in data connection. Along with that is the participation of key industries such as agricultural products, food, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, etc., showing the increasingly important role of this system in the supply chain in Vietnam.

Director of the Yunnan Agricultural Cooperative (Phuc Tho district) Doan Van Thang said that with the support of the authorities, the cooperative's products have been affixed with traceability stamps, using packaging and the collective trademark logo "Yunnan Banana" on the website http://chuoivannam.com so that consumers can recognize and feel secure about the quality when purchasing.

Similarly, participating in declaring traceability information through the National Traceability Information Portal, Ms. Dinh Thi Loan - Manager of Dong Son Medicinal Materials Cooperative (Ninh Binh province) said that the entire production process of the cooperative is digitized, all data is entered into the traceability software integrated on the Portal. In particular, according to Ms. Dinh Thi Loan, since being supported to implement the traceability system, the cooperative's products have become more known to consumers, and consumers have more confidence in the quality of the products. In addition, publicizing traceability information also helps reduce the risk of counterfeiting of the cooperative's goods.

Support businesses to meet market demands

Sharing about the application of information technology in tracing the origin of goods, Ms. Pham Thi Ly, Chairwoman of the Founding Council and Director of the Center for Enterprise Integration and Development (under the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises) said that the center has coordinated with Hanoi city to support cooperatives and enterprises in applying Check VN technology to establish data, digitize, monitor, control, secure, and authenticate information about goods and products that meet food hygiene and safety conditions; at the same time, connecting manufacturers, managers with consumers through QR code and application software on Check VN.

Regarding the operation of the National Traceability Information Portal in recent times, Acting Director of the National Code and Barcode Center Bui Ba Chinh said that the operation has brought many benefits to management agencies, businesses and consumers. For businesses, the National Traceability Information Portal creates a centralized traceability data connection platform, helping businesses easily publish and manage product information. At the same time, it enhances the competitiveness of businesses because goods with clear traceability information will be easily accepted in the international market; meeting legal requirements because many markets such as the EU and the US require products to have full traceability.

For consumers, the National Origin Traceability Portal helps consumers easily check the origin of products using QR codes; increase trust in products, especially food, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods; protect rights because if there is a problem with product quality, consumers can look up information to make appropriate decisions...

For management agencies, through the National Traceability Portal, they can monitor, control and handle violations of food quality and safety; collect and analyze product data, serving the development of policies and regulations.

In order for Vietnamese products to maintain their position and develop new markets, the implementation of traceability plays a very important role. Therefore, in parallel with operations, propaganda and training on traceability continue to be promoted, helping businesses and localities understand the benefits and methods of implementing traceability effectively. The National Code and Barcode Center and relevant agencies continue to guide and support units and businesses that need to connect to the portal, ensuring that the system is exploited to its maximum benefits.

The operation of the National Traceability Portal is one of the important steps in the process of improving transparency, ensuring product quality and supporting businesses to meet market requirements. In the coming time, the implementation, guidance and support for businesses will continue to be promoted, helping traceability truly become a useful tool in product and goods management in Vietnam.
