The red flag with yellow star, the sacred symbol of Vietnam, officially flew on top of A Pa Chai Flagpole (Sin Thau commune, Muong Nhe district, Dien Bien province) on the 71st anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7, 2025.
This important event not only has profound political and cultural significance but is also a sacred mark, firmly affirming the national territorial sovereignty at the westernmost border of the Fatherland.
Pride at the border crossroads
In a solemn and proud atmosphere, delegates along with a large number of cadres, soldiers and people of all ethnic groups in Muong Nhe district solemnly performed the flag-raising ceremony at A Pa Chai Flagpole on the morning of May 7.
The moment the red flag with a yellow star measuring more than 37 square meters was raised to the top of the pole, flying in the mountains and forests of the Northwest as a symbol of firmly affirming national territorial sovereignty , an emotion and pride welled up in each person.
Present at the flag-raising ceremony, Ms. Po Son Me, a Ha Nhi ethnic in Sin Thau commune (Muong Nhe district) expressed: “Witnessing the A Pa Chai Flagpole, a sacred symbol of the Fatherland, being built and completed right on my homeland, I feel extremely happy and proud. This is a great honor for the ethnic people in Sin Thau. I vow to join the people of the Sin Thau border to preserve and protect this project well, so that this place becomes a meaningful destination for visitors from near and far and so that everyone who comes can feel the spirit of patriotism and the will to protect the sacred sovereignty of the Vietnamese people.”
According to the Secretary of the Party Committee of Sin Thau Ly Phi Ca commune, the construction of the A Pa Chai Flagpole is an event of special significance to the local government and people. For a long time, the people here have always longed for a symbolic construction.
The A Pa Chai Flagpole project not only affirms national sovereignty at the westernmost point of the country but also contributes to promoting local socio-economic development.
When the project is completed and put into operation, it will certainly attract more and more tourists, creating conditions for people to develop tourism services, improve their lives, and contribute to firmly consolidating national defense and security at the border.
Standing in front of the red flag with a yellow star flying proudly on top of the A Pa Chai Flagpole, Senior Lieutenant Quang Anh Quan, Assistant for Mass Affairs, Political Department, Border Guard of Dien Bien Province, could not hide his emotion. “The moment the national flag was slowly raised, fluttering between the land and sky of the border area, I felt a sense of pride rising in my chest,”
Lieutenant Quang Anh Quan said.
As a Border Guard soldier, with the mission of protecting the sacred territorial sovereignty of the Fatherland, he feels even more proud and understands his responsibility. That flag is a symbol of independence and freedom and also a reminder of the sacrifices and indomitable will of generations of his fathers who have protected each border and landmark...
Sovereignty mark in the far west of the Fatherland
The A Pa Chai Flagpole project was approved for implementation under Decision No. 767/QD-People's Committee, dated May 4, 2023 of the People's Committee of Dien Bien province with a total investment of 31 billion VND from socialized capital.
A Pa Chai Flagpole was started in November 2023, built on a mountain top with an altitude of 1,459m above sea level (belonging to the Khoang La San mountain range, about 1,387m from landmark 0 at the junction of the Vietnam-Laos-China border).
The total area of the flagpole is 407 square meters, including the surrounding walking path, the flag-raising yard, the landscaped flower beds and the center is the flagpole, symbolizing the connection of ethnic groups gathered around the sacred fire of the nation.
From above, the flagpole is stylized like a white orchid blooming in the mountains and forests of the Northwest.
The flagpole has a total height of 45.19m; the flag size is 7.5x5m, the area is 37.5m2. The body of the flagpole is shaped like an octagon, showing balance, solidity, and majesty, suitable for the nature of the structure as a sacred flagpole of the Fatherland.
The base of the flagpole is highlighted by 5 reliefs depicting typical images of the Northwest culture and ethnic motifs, according to 5 main themes: The Legend of the Mother Gourd - a legend of the Khmu ethnic group; Cultural beliefs and festivals; Labor, production and traditional occupations; Folk songs, folk dances, folk games; 7/5 Square, a circle of solidarity among ethnic groups.
In addition, the top of the flagpole is covered with stone reliefs with the theme of Uncle Ho with the ethnic groups of the Northwest. The path up to the flagpole consists of 519 steps that cling to the natural terrain of the hillside.
Mr. Le Thanh Do, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Bien province affirmed that A Pa Chai Flagpole was built with great enthusiasm, demonstrating the steadfast loyalty of the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien province in building and protecting national border sovereignty.
The flagpole is a symbol of patriotism, national pride and the aspiration to build a sustainable country. The red flag with a yellow star flies on top of the A Pa Chai Flagpole to remind future generations of the value of peace and the responsibility of every Vietnamese citizen in preserving the country's borders.
A Pa Chai Flagpole is also a cultural and historical work with the meaning of educating revolutionary traditions for the younger generation, and will become a highlight for the Dien Bien - A Pa Chai westernmost tourist route, creating a great driving force for local tourism. This will be an attractive cultural and tourist destination for visitors, generating a large source of income for local people./.
