Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health , visited nurse Trang who is being treated at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital.

On the morning of October 23, 29-year-old Ban Van Vy suddenly grabbed a fruit knife and rushed into room 305, Neonatal Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, attacking a patient's family member and a nurse named Nhung.

After that, Vy picked up two newborn babies and tried to throw them out the window, but was grabbed by two patients' relatives. Other medical staff rushed in to stop them, but Vy chased and attacked them with a knife... The incident left 7 people injured, including 3 nurses, 2 patients' relatives, and 2 newborn babies. Among them, nurse Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, was the most seriously injured, with two wounds to the carotid and clavicular areas.

On the morning of October 24, Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health, said that thanks to timely emergency care, nurse Trang's health is now stable. The other victims only suffered soft tissue injuries, not life-threatening.

Violence against medical staff is no longer a rare occurrence in recent times. Many incidents occur right in the Emergency and Intensive Care Units, where life and death are just a hair's breadth apart.

Mr. Duc said that the work of medical staff is inherently unique and high pressure. Every year, the health system has to receive hundreds of millions of outpatient visits, in which central hospitals can receive tens of thousands of patients every day. Medical staff have to work almost continuously, overloaded.

While medical examination and treatment is providing services, medical staff should also be trained to have appropriate explanations for relatives. Because when a relative is sick or in critical condition, the family will be very worried, so most cases of attacks on medical staff occur in the Emergency and Resuscitation Department.

However, Mr. Duc emphasized that any act of abuse against medical staff violates the law and needs to be strictly handled as a deterrent.

On the medical side, the Ministry of Health is implementing many systematic solutions: Strengthening education and guidance on communication skills, explaining to patients and their families, especially in departments where conflicts often occur such as emergency and resuscitation; strengthening hospital security forces, coordinating with the police according to inter-sectoral regulations that have been implemented for over 10 years; promoting digital transformation, improving medical examination and treatment processes, helping people access services faster, reducing frustration due to waiting; improving medical examination and treatment facilities and environments, so that patients feel comfortable and medical staff are less pressured.

According to Mr. Duc, when the incident of a medical worker being attacked by a family member occurred in Nghe An, the authorities quickly intervened and handled the situation strictly to ensure deterrence.
