Mastered liver transplant techniques
The liver transplant technique transfer program between the two hospitals was launched in March 2024, with 8 training sessions for 62 students in 14 specialties, under the direct guidance of leading experts from 108 Military Central Hospital.
By December 2024, Military Hospital 175 had successfully performed the first liver transplant, becoming the first military hospital in the southern region to perform liver transplants from living donors.
In just 10 months (much shorter than the 2-year plan), the hospital's liver transplant team successfully performed 10 liver transplants, including 3 special emergency cases, saving the lives of many patients in critical condition.
This success beyond the plan demonstrates the excellent speed of absorption and technical mastery of the medical team of Military Hospital 175, and at the same time proves the effectiveness and sustainability of the transfer model between the two military hospitals.
Thus, after nearly 1.5 years of implementing the program of cooperation in transferring liver transplant techniques from the 108 Military Central Hospital, the 175 Military Hospital has basically mastered liver transplant techniques, becoming the first medical unit of the Army in the southern region to independently perform this specialized technique.

Colonel, Associate Professor, Doctor Le Van Thanh, Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery, Director of the Institute of Digestive Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, Head of the expert team transferring liver transplant techniques to Military Hospital 175, shared that his impression of the team of doctors at Military Hospital 175 is that they are very young but have high spirit, will and discipline.
With a complex technique like liver transplantation requiring the coordination of many specialties, discipline and compliance with procedures play a decisive role.
In the first cases, the 175 doctors followed the instructions exactly. But in the 8th and 9th cases, when they encountered difficult situations, they proactively discussed and found solutions.
“We realized that your technique was no longer a copy, but had begun to form independent thinking, courage and creativity. By the 10th case, the team from Military Hospital 175 had completely mastered the liver transplant technique, successfully performing the complex surgery.
I am very proud to see my students grow up, receive and implement techniques, affirming the position of Military Hospital 175 on the Vietnamese organ transplant map," Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thanh emphasized.
Towards the Southern Region's Advanced Organ Transplant Center
With the completion of liver transplant technology transfer, Military Hospital 175 has become the 8th medical facility in the country to independently perform this technique, and is also the leading organ transplant center of the Army in the southern region.
Colonel, PhD, Doctor Nguyen Viet Cuong, Deputy Director of Military Hospital 175 shared: “The success of the program not only has professional significance, but also affirms the effectiveness of the cooperation and technology transfer model between the two military hospitals - 108 and 175, contributing to spreading the value of knowledge, discipline and the will to overcome difficulties of Vietnamese military doctors. Each liver transplant is a journey of revival, a testament to the spirit of dedication, discipline and aspiration to contribute”.

Colonel, Doctor, Physician Nguyen Viet Cuong also said that in the coming time, doctors of Military Hospital 175 will continue to improve their professional qualifications to fully master complex organ transplant techniques.
The hospital's project still has two techniques: lung transplant and heart transplant. Military Hospital 175 hopes that Central Military Hospital 108 will continue to support.
In addition, the hospital will also send doctors, nurses, and technicians to countries with advanced organ transplant techniques for in-depth training.
At the same time, in the future, the hospital will also increase the application of modern methods in surgery and treatment, including planning to invest in surgical robots.
“Today's success is the foundation for Military Hospital 175 to continue to master more complex organ transplant techniques, moving towards building a modern Organ Transplant Center, increasingly serving the health care work for soldiers and people in the southern region,” Colonel, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Viet Cuong emphasized.
