In Australia, it is illegal to sell raw or unpasteurized milk for human consumption. This is because it can contain dangerous pathogens.

Spreading misinformation about unpasteurized milk on social media

Unpasteurized milk can cause serious illness in children, even death.

Sterilization is used to destroy disease-causing bacteria such as E.coli, salmonella and listeria, ensuring food safety for consumers.

In fact, Australia has had serious consequences from consuming raw milk. In 2014, a coroner in the state of Victoria concluded that raw milk was “highly likely” to have caused the death of a 3-year-old boy.

Previously, the child had drunk a type of milk sold under the label “shower gel”, which clearly stated “not for human consumption” but was still sold in many health food stores and independent supermarkets.

Deakin University nutrition and public health expert Emily Denniss expressed concerns about the long-term impact of misleading eating trends spread through social media.

She said that although there were no specific statistics on the number of people consuming raw milk, the trend of promoting this type of product was clearly increasing. According to her, “such misinformation can erode public trust in reliable scientific sources”.

Meanwhile, food microbiologist Cathy McAuley of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) said the consumption of raw milk was increasing at a worrying rate.

She warned that pathogens can be passed from cow to milk or come from the milk's environment, such as soil, water or manure, so “sterilization is a necessary step to eliminate the risk.”

Mr. Stuart Johnson, a member of the Australian Dairy Industry Association Council in Western Australia, also emphasized that unpasteurized milk can cause serious illnesses in children, even leading to death.
