After numerous delays and budget overruns in the construction of two new 747-8 'Air Force One's', the US Department of Defense is preparing to take delivery of a luxury Boeing 747-8 private jet as a stopgap solution.

The interior of the original 747 was designed and fitted out by Cabinet Design firm Alberto Pinto. The company has completed many custom VIP jet interiors in the past, but the 747-8 is the largest and most ambitious private jet project the company has ever undertaken. It took four years to complete and is often described as a ‘flying mansion’.

Inspired by the cabins of superyachts and luxury apartments, the interiors are largely a mix of textures and materials, with clever backlighting to highlight features or make furniture appear to float.

The cabin is 4,500 square feet (418 square meters) and normally a plane of this size can carry up to 450 passengers. This jet has much less capacity, albeit in much nicer surroundings.

The jet's entrance has curved walls and a lighted staircase leading to the upper deck. Up the stairs, at the 747's iconic 'hump', is a full living room with bookshelves, a corner sofa and a giant flat-screen TV.

Behind the living area is a children's play area and crew quarters. The 747-8 has the largest upper deck of any 747, allowing for comfortable crew accommodation and other accommodations.

The jet's highlight is the main living area, which features three oversized sofas and a vaulted ceiling. The furniture is custom-designed and includes a wacapou wood table with a goatskin top.

Opposite the seating area is a round table, perfect for dining or even playing cards. More seating options are available in the main lounge, including pairs of armchairs with tables in between, ideal for private conversations and intimate drinks.

Further back, a private office space has more bookshelves and a four-person table. Although decorated as an office, the table could also double as a dining area for a more private dinner.

Throughout the aircraft, the seats are premium, covered in luxurious leather and have electronically controlled reclining functions.

Guest bedrooms are similarly lavishly furnished and all have en suite bathrooms.

At the back of the plane is a business-class cabin, ideal for accommodating entourage or other staff. For President Trump, this could be a press seat—a significant upgrade from the economy-class seating typically reserved for the media on current Air Force One 747s.

For President Trump, the Boeing 747-8 private jet boasts a luxurious ensuite bedroom. The master bedroom is located in the nose of the plane, just below the cockpit. It is the most private area of the plane and also the quietest because it is furthest from the engines.

The bedroom features a large bed with a tanned leather base, along with a two-seater sofa for private lounging. The side walls are lined with counters and storage, while a door leads to the en suite bathroom.

In the bathroom, there is a walk-in shower, oversized vanity with mirror, and sink. Gold accents complement the dark wood trim, and the cream color scheme makes the plane look modern and upscale.

Yves Pickardt, the project leader, commented, “The owner gave us complete freedom. He wasn’t looking for anything too extravagant, with gold and diamonds. On the contrary, he asked for a bit of simplicity, which in the end is really true luxury.”

Four years of work went into the giant Boeing 747-8 private jet. “A project like this is a dream come true, something that only happens once or twice in a designer’s lifetime,” Pickardt continued. “In a way, it’s a milestone in aviation history.”

There’s no indication that President Trump intends to change the interior of the plane in any way. Certainly, the gold walls, plush carpets, and lavish styling are very much in keeping with the president’s famous aesthetic, so we can expect any cosmetic changes to be minor.

The main changes will revolve around installing the necessary communications and security systems on any aircraft that operates like Air Force One. Defense contractor L3 Harris has been tasked with overhauling the aircraft to meet Department of Defense requirements.

The “flying mansion” was given to the Department of Defense rather than to President Trump, so it did not need to be approved by Congress . Federal law strictly controls gifts to the President. Gifts given to the President by individuals or organizations are not only considered public property, but must also be approved by the House of Representatives upon receipt.
