On June 17, the Hanoi High Court reopened the appellate trial of defendant Trinh Van Quyet (former Chairman of FLC Group) and related defendants in the case of stock market manipulation and fraudulent appropriation of assets.

Twenty-five defendants appealed their sentences, and the court summoned all 50 defendants involved in the case to the trial. In addition to the defendants who appealed, 134 victims and 396 people with related rights and obligations also appealed.

The trial is scheduled to take place from June 17 to 21.

At this appeal hearing, due to his still weak health, former FLC Chairman Trinh Van Quyet submitted a request to be tried in absentia.

The presiding judge announced a letter from Hospital 198 responding to the detention center, stating that Mr. Quyet was in a critical condition, experiencing severe fatigue, difficulty breathing, suffering from multiple illnesses, and had a "very high risk of death."

According to the hospital's announcement, Mr. Quyet has suffered significant functional decline and is currently undergoing long-term antibiotic and anti-tuberculosis treatment, requiring ongoing monitoring at the hospital.

Trinh Van Quyet's lawyer stated that the hospital had assessed the former FLC chairman's health condition as having a "very high risk of death," compared to the previous assessment of a "high risk of death," and therefore requested that the court proceed with the trial in absentia.

In light of these developments, the representative of the prosecution stated that this was the third time the appeal hearing had been opened, the previous two times being postponed due to Mr. Quyết's health issues, and requested the court to continue the trial.

Prior to today's appeal hearing, defendant Trinh Van Quyet's wife paid an additional 1,400 billion VND to the Civil Enforcement Department of Hanoi. Including the previous payment, the three brothers of defendant Trinh Van Quyet have fully settled their civil liability as per the first-instance judgment.

Previously, in August 2024, the Hanoi People's Court held the first-instance trial of the case and sentenced defendant Trinh Van Quyet to 21 years in prison for the crimes of fraud and appropriation of property and manipulation of the stock market.

Convicted of the same two charges, Trinh Van Quyet's two sisters, Trinh Thi Minh Hue and Trinh Thi Thuy Nga, were sentenced to 14 years and 8 years in prison, respectively.

Regarding civil liability, the trial court ordered defendant Trinh Van Quyet and his sister Trinh Thi Minh Hue to jointly compensate 1,785 billion VND for the crime of fraud and appropriation of property. Dividing the responsibility proportionally, defendant Quyet must pay 1,369 billion VND, and defendant Hue must pay 152 billion VND.

In the case of stock market manipulation, the trial court ordered the three defendants, Quyết and his siblings, to pay back 683 billion VND. Specifically, Quyết paid 500 billion VND, Huế 100 billion VND, and Nga 83 billion VND.

Following the first-instance trial, defendant Trinh Van Quyet filed an appeal requesting a reduction in his prison sentence and a reduction in his civil liability. His two sisters also appealed for leniency; 22 other defendants requested reduced sentences, suspended sentences, or the lifting of asset freezes…

Prior to the appeal trial in December 2024, the Hanoi High Court of Appeal heard the case, but the panel of judges later decided to postpone the trial because the defendant, Trinh Van Quyet, was undergoing treatment for multiple illnesses and could not be present at the trial. Many lawyers and victims also requested a postponement.

On March 25th, the Hanoi High Court reopened the trial and again decided to postpone it due to the defendant Trinh Van Quyet's poor health, posing a "risk of death." In addition to health reasons, the defendant's family submitted a request to the court to postpone the appellate trial to allow him time to fully rectify the consequences of the case.
