Quang Nam Central General Hospital has just successfully treated a critical drowning case, LAT (16 years old, residing in Nui Thanh town, Nui Thanh district).
Previously, T. was brought ashore by locals after drowning at Rang beach in a coma, cyanotic, and stopped breathing. T. was taken to the hospital's Emergency Department in a coma, respiratory failure, acute pulmonary edema, and was immediately intubated for respiratory support.
The patient was then transferred to the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department for intensive resuscitation, respiratory control with a ventilator, bronchoscopy, maximum lung protection, treatment of secondary pneumonia, brain protection, circulation adjustment, water and electrolytes.
More than a day later, T. passed the critical stage and her breathing began to stabilize and her health gradually improved from the 4th day. After nearly 2 weeks of treatment, T. was discharged from the hospital.
[ VIDEO ] - Sharing from patient's mother:
Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem, Department of Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning, shared: “In this drowning case, T. was given first aid by the locals correctly: lying on his back, tilting his head to the left and performing chest compressions on the spot. This first aid method helps the victim's airway fluid to easily flow out with the rhythm of chest compressions, bringing oxygenated blood to the brain sooner.”
Doctor Ngoc Diem warns that summer is now here, the time when children are most likely to have drowning accidents. Parents need to supervise their children while they are playing, and absolutely do not let them swim or play near ponds, lakes, rivers or streams without an adult accompanying them. In case of a drowning accident, first aid must be given immediately and the child taken to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.
