Da Nang - Quang Nam join together, which projects are on track for implementation?

Dredging Co Co River, going by water from Han River to Hoi An

Co Co River is a river that runs parallel to the coast, connecting the Han River (Da Nang) to the end of the Thu Bon River (Hoi An). This river once played an important role in the development of the two port cities of Da Nang and Hoi An.

However, more than 100 years ago, this river was seriously silted up. In 2012, the two local authorities joined hands to dredge the poetic river again, with the hope of developing tourism and creating a landscape highlight.

Da Nang has implemented an emergency dredging and flood drainage project on the Co Co River section through its territory with an investment of more than 500 billion VND, including upgrading the bridge to ensure traffic flow.

On the Quang Nam side, the project to dredge, drain floodwaters and prevent saltwater intrusion on the Co Co River was implemented with an investment capital of 1,200 billion VND, aiming to clear the flow as well as build a number of bridges across the river.

Currently, the two localities are dredging components to realize the project. With the project being "under one roof", people expect the project to be completed on schedule.

Before the resolution of the 11th Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee on the merger of Quang Nam and Da Nang city, the Standing Committees of the two localities had held many meetings to discuss cooperation and development between the two localities.

One of the important contents agreed upon is the coordination of research, implementation of investment preparation work, and finding capital sources to build a modern urban railway/subway line (LRT/MRT) connecting the two localities.

In 2024, the transport sectors of the two localities held a meeting to agree and strive to complete the feasibility study report, moving towards investment and construction in the 2025 - 2030 period.

Recently, in the list of 277 projects announced by Quang Nam province to prioritize investment attraction in 2025, there are two major urban railway lines including Chu Lai - Da Nang and Hoi An - Da Nang.

Water resources management from upstream to estuary

Over the past years, Quang Nam and Da Nang have established a Coordination Board for the integrated management of water resources in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river basin and coastal areas.

The Coordination Board is responsible for comprehensive management of water resources, environmental protection and response to climate change in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river basin. In particular, coordinating the regulation of water volume from upstream (Quang Nam) to downstream (Da Nang), to ensure irrigation and raw water sources for domestic water production.

The merger of Da Nang and Quang Nam will ensure unity in water resource management from upstream to downstream, reducing risks to water security.
