Chestnuts have a delicious, fatty and slightly sweet taste, are a very good food for human health, containing many nutrients such as: Fat, protein, vitamins B1, B2, C and some other minerals. This is a specialty that many customers love and seek to buy, especially Ngan Son chestnuts.

Realizing the high economic value of chestnut trees, nearly 10 years ago, Mr. Nong Van Cuong in Quan Lang village, Duc Van commune (Ngan Son) planted more than 2 hectares of chestnut trees. Up to now, Mr. Cuong's family has planted nearly 5 hectares of chestnut trees intercropped with other fruit trees.
These days, early in the morning, Mr. Nong Van Cuong and his wife, Nong Thi Tam, go to the garden to harvest the fallen ripe chestnuts to separate the seeds. Mr. Cuong said that in 2023, the chestnut garden harvested more than 1 ton of seeds, bringing in an income of about 100 million VND. This year, the chestnut yield is expected to increase even more.

Thanks to favorable natural conditions, chestnut trees here grow and develop well. Chestnuts ripen in August and September. The chestnuts on the tree are green and have many thorns. When ripe, the chestnuts turn yellow and fall to the ground. People will use tongs to harvest them, then peel off the thorny shell to get the seeds.
Up to now, the whole district of Ngan Son has planted over 190 hectares of chestnut trees, of which nearly 83 hectares are harvested, with an estimated yield of 4 tons/ha and an estimated output of over 330 tons. Chestnut trees are mainly grown in Duc Van, Bang Van, Thuong An communes and Na Phac town. Ngan Son chestnuts are consumed quite favorably with prices ranging from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/kg. Each hectare of chestnuts at harvest age will generate an income of nearly 400 million VND/year, higher than many other crops.
Currently, the area of chestnut trees for harvest increases every year, which means that the chestnut yield also increases. Determining that it is impossible to do it manually by shelling each chestnut, Ms. Ban Thi Ngan, Director of Hop Phat Cooperative (Ngan Son) invested nearly 50 million VND to buy a chestnut shelling machine and a chestnut shelling machine. This can be considered the first chestnut shelling machine in Ngan Son district and is the starting point for a more efficient chestnut production process.
Chestnuts bring high income to Ngan Son people. Therefore, mechanization in production and increasing product value need to be further promoted to reduce costs, bringing products to people with high quality and reasonable prices.
Mr. Nong Van Hoat, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ngan Son district, said: “To promote the potential and sustainable development of chestnut trees in the area, in recent times, Ngan Son district has focused on expanding the area to make chestnut trees the main crop, bringing high economic value. Along with that, the district also encourages people to grow organically to meet consumer tastes. Up to now, the whole district has 5 hectares of chestnuts grown organically”./.
