On the morning of May 10 (New York time), at the Special Emergency Session on the Middle East situation and the Palestinian issue, the UN General Assembly discussed and considered a draft Resolution introduced by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on granting additional rights to Palestine as a UN Observer State.
Vietnam was one of 77 co-sponsoring countries and 143 countries voted in favor of the historic Resolution on the State of Palestine.
According to the newly adopted Resolution, starting from the 79th session of the General Assembly (September 2024), the Palestinian delegation will be privileged to enjoy some additional rights similar to those of member states when attending meetings and conferences organized by the General Assembly and some other agencies of the United Nations.
The Palestinian delegation will have the right to speak on behalf of groups of countries, introduce and co-sponsor proposals; the right to run for a number of positions at the Plenary Session and the main Committees of the General Assembly...
The new General Assembly resolution reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and assesses that the State of Palestine has met the criteria for full membership of the United Nations.
The resolution also recommends that the Security Council consider favourably the admission of Palestine in accordance with Article 4 of the UN Charter, emphasizing the broad support of Member States for this legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people.
At the session, the President of the UN General Assembly and most countries expressed deep concern over the conflict and humanitarian situation in Gaza as well as recent complicated developments in the region. Delegates assessed that the newly adopted resolution is an important step towards admitting Palestine as a full member of the UN, contributing to promoting the implementation of the “two-state” solution to achieve long-term and sustainable peace in the Middle East.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, will deliver a speech on Vietnam's stance when the Special Emergency Session of the General Assembly continues on May 13.
