Due to his advanced age, the Venerable Elder passed away at 9:15 a.m. on March 28, 2014 (February 28, Giap Ngo year) at Van Duc Pagoda, 502 To Ngoc Van Street, Tam Phu Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City.
Lifespan: 98 years, Ha la: 69 years.
The official burial ceremony was held at 6:00 p.m. on March 28, 2014 (February 28, Giap Ngo year). The coffin was enshrined at Van Duc Pagoda, 502 To Ngoc Van Street, Tam Phu Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City.
The visitation begins at 7:00 a.m. on March 29, 2014 and ends on April 2, 2014 (from February 29 to March 3, the year of the Horse).
The memorial service was held at 8:00 a.m. on April 3, 2014 (March 4, Giap Ngo year), after which the coffin of the Venerable Elder was invited to be placed in the stupa at Van Duc Pagoda, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City.
Biography of the Great Elder Monk Thich Tri Tinh
I. The process of becoming a monk and working of the Most Venerable Elder Thich Tri Tinh, secular name Nguyen Van Binh, dharma name Thich Tri Tinh.
The monk was born in 1917 (Dinh Ty) in My Luong village, Cai Tau Thuong district, Sa Dec province (now Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province).
In 1937, he became a monk with Venerable Thich Hong Xung at Van Linh Pagoda, Tinh Bien District, Chau Doc Province (now Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province), was given the Dharma name Nhat Binh, title Thien Chanh, belonging to the 41st generation of the Lam Te Gia Pho Zen lineage.
In 1940, he went to Hue to study intermediate Buddhist studies at Tay Thien Buddhist School and college Buddhist studies at Bao Quoc Buddhist School.
In 1941, he received the novice ordination at Quoc An Pagoda and was given the Dharma name Tri Tinh by Venerable Thich Tri Do.
In 1945, he returned to the South and established Phat Quang Buddhist School in Tra On district, Can Tho province. Venerable Thich Thien Hoa was the Director and Venerable was the Chief Teacher and Preceptor.
In 1946, he received the full ordination and Bodhisattva precepts at Long An Pagoda - Sa Dec.
In 1948, he established Lien Hai Buddhist School at Van Phuoc Pagoda, Binh Tri Dong Commune, Long Hung Thuong District, Cho Lon Province (now Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) and served as Director.
In 1950, he entered a hermitage to practice meditation at Linh Son Pagoda - Vung Tau.
In 1951, with Venerable Thich Thien Hoa, he merged three Buddhist schools Lien Hai, Mai Son, and Sung Duc into Nam Viet Buddhist School at An Quang Pagoda, District 10, Cho Lon Province (now District 10, Ho Chi Minh City).
In 1953, construction of Van Duc Pagoda - Thu Duc began.
In 1955, he established the Pure Land Association at Van Duc Pagoda, Thu Duc District; he assumed the position of Preceptor of the Great Ordination Platform of A Xà Lê, Tu Hieu - Hue.
In 1957, he assumed the position of Deputy Executive Committee and Head of the Education Committee of the Southern Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and organized the Tathagata Messenger courses at Phap Hoi Pagoda, Tuyen Lam Pagoda - Cho Lon, and Duoc Su Pagoda - Gia Dinh to train abbots and cadres for the Church.
In 1959, at the 2nd Congress (September 10-11, 1959) at An Quang Pagoda, he was elected to the position of Deputy Executive Councilor of the Vietnam National Sangha; and served as the Preceptor of the Hai Duc - Nha Trang Great Ordination Platform.
From 1960 to 1962, he served as a preceptor in the Great Precepts Platforms held at An Quang Pagoda and Phap Hoi Pagoda - Cho Lon.
In 1962, he was invited by the Central Buddhist Sangha to the position of Vice President of the Central Buddhist Institute Hai Duc - Nha Trang.
In 1964, he was the Head of the delegation of the Southern Vietnam Buddhist Sangha to attend the Unified Congress of Vietnamese Buddhism held at Xa Loi Pagoda to establish the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha and was elected by the Congress to the position of General Director of the General Department of Sangha Affairs.
In 1966 - 1968, at the 2nd Congress of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam, the Venerable was elected to the position of Chief Secretary of the Supreme Sangha Council.
From 1974 to 1980, the Venerable held the position of Deputy Director of the Institute of Propagation of Buddhism of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam.
In 1980, the Venerable took on the position of Deputy Head of the Committee for the Unification of Vietnamese Buddhism to establish the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, the common home of Vietnamese Buddhism.
From November 4 to November 7, 1981, at the National Buddhist Unification Conference, the Venerable was honored as a member of the Council of Evidence, elected as Permanent Vice President of the Executive Council, Head of the Central Sangha Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
From 1982 to 1987, he held the position of Head of the Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Sangha.
From 1984 to present, he has held the position of Chairman of the Executive Council, Head of the Central Sangha Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
1984 - 2001, held the position of Head Monk of the Great Ordination Platforms organized by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha at An Quang Pagoda.
In 1984, at the 4th Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Venerable was elected as Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City; at the 3rd Congress, the Venerable was elected as a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
In 1994, the Venerable was elected by the 8th Congress of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to the position of Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
In 2004, he assumed the position of Head of the Great Ordination Platform of Venerable Tri Tan organized by the Buddhist Executive Committee of Binh Duong province.
In 2005, he held the position of Head Monk of the 4th Thien Hoa Great Ordination Platform organized by the Buddhist Executive Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.
II. Compilation and translation works: Although busy with many tasks for the Church, the Venerable has translated and compiled 15 sets of books to serve the teaching and study of monks, nuns, and Buddhists, such as: Lotus Sutra, Avatamsaka Sutra, Mahaparinirvana Sutra, Mahaprajna Sutra, Mahavairocana Sutra + Mahasamghika Sutra, Samantabhadra Sutra, Ksitigarbha Sutra, Three Jewels Sutra, Bhikshu Precepts, Bodhisattva Precepts, Lotus Sutra Outline, Lotus Sutra General Meaning, Collection of Pure Land Interpenetration, Path to Pure Land, and Treatise on Enlightenment.
III. Construction of facilities: In 1995, restored and renovated Van Linh Pagoda and To Hong Xung Tower at Cam Mountain, Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province.
In 2001, the lecture hall, open-air Quan Am Buddha statue, library, meditation room, and reading room of Van Duc pagoda were restored.
In 2002, the investor rebuilt the Central Office 2 of the Church - Quang Duc Zen Monastery.
In 2004, rebuilt the main hall and ancestral hall of Van Duc pagoda.
IV. Social work: With his prestige and virtue, the Venerable was elected as Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
Regardless of his position, he always receives special respect from Vietnamese Buddhist monks, nuns, and followers at home and abroad, as well as the social community. He is a shining example of good religion and beautiful life for today and tomorrow. In recognition of the Venerable's great contributions to Buddhism - Nation - Socialism, the Party and State have awarded him many noble awards.
At 9:15 a.m. on March 28, 2014, the Venerable passed away peacefully at Van Duc Pagoda, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City. He had lived for 98 years and was a monk for 69 years.
The Venerable's life is a shining example of wisdom and education for many generations of monks and nuns. With the calmness and patience of a truly learned and respected monk, and with his great contributions to the Dharma and the Nation, the Venerable always has special affection in the hearts of Vietnamese Buddhists.
