Helicopters practice flying flags to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory

Over the past several months, hundreds of officers and soldiers of three helicopter regiments of the Air Defense - Air Force Service ( Ministry of National Defense ) have been actively practicing to carry out the task of flying flags to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024).

According to the plan, the celebration will have a welcoming Air Force consisting of 12 helicopters (9 official, 2 reserve and 1 search and rescue). These 9 helicopters will perform a demonstration flight over the Dien Bien Phu City Stadium, then fly around the city for 45 minutes.

To implement the plan, the Air Defense - Air Force has organized a review and developed a plan to select pilots and flight crew members from Regiment 916 (Division 371), Regiment 917 (Division 370) and Regiment 930 (Division 372).

In recent days, pilots have practiced flying in formations of 3, 6 and 9 aircraft at Hoa Lac airport.

Lieutenant Colonel Dam Van Long, Regiment 916 (Division 371) was the person who directly performed the operation of collecting and releasing the flag on the plane.

"The flags are of the same size and are made of polyester, a fabric that is tough, durable and breathable, ensuring good performance during the process. During the process of collecting and releasing the flags, we have to align them to ensure that the flags fly under the belly of the helicopter," said Lieutenant Colonel Dam Van Long.

Colonel Ta Mong Vu, Commander of Air Force Regiment 916 (Air Force Division 371) said that from the experience of performing demonstration flights at previous events, the unit has drawn many experiences related to training, planning, selecting flight crews, and pilots who are all experienced to perform the flag-raising mission.

"With the complex terrain of Dien Bien Phu city, with an average altitude of 481 meters, and a surrounding basin with an average mountain altitude of 1,400 meters, the climate is constantly changing, and in the morning there is often thick fog affecting visibility, so pilots and flight crews must be thoroughly trained in terrain and meteorological conditions," Colonel Ta Mong Vu emphasized.

According to Colonel Ta Mong Vu, each officer and soldier performing the assigned task must understand that this is both a responsibility and an honor and pride, so no matter how difficult or arduous it is, they will overcome it.

On the morning of April 19, the Air Defense - Air Force helicopters completed the mission of transferring the airport from Hoa Lac airport to Dien Bien to prepare for the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory.

The parade is expected to begin with 21 artillery rounds to the National Anthem, followed by a performance by nine helicopters carrying the Party and national flags.

This is an occasion to demonstrate the strength of the people's armed forces, the spirit of national solidarity, and affirm the determination of the entire Party, people and army to successfully carry out the cause of building and firmly defending the Fatherland.
