University application process 2024: Things to keep in mind to avoid regrets.

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí19/07/2024

Carefully research the information and check the tuition fees.

After receiving their 2024 high school graduation exam results, candidates have nearly two weeks to register and adjust their university admission preferences on the Ministry of Education and Training 's system. The registration period starts on July 18th and ends at 5 PM on July 30th.

Offering advice to candidates, Mr. Tran Nam, Head of Student Affairs Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized the importance of researching information before choosing a major.

According to him, this is a serious issue, and students should not choose a field of study without thoroughly understanding it.

"My advice is that you must truly love your field and future career, and have the appropriate learning ability. You must understand your field of study," Mr. Nam expressed.

According to him, for a long time, the training programs of the ngành (field of study) have been published on the websites of the faculties and schools so that candidates can learn about the program, training roadmap, and other necessary information when making their choice.

In addition to the curriculum, students should also pay attention to related information such as student activities, scientific research, international exchanges, scholarships, etc., to better understand the faculty and major they will choose to study.

Another issue that shouldn't be overlooked is tuition fees and living expenses. At the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, students are given maximum support to reside in dormitories. According to Mr. Tran Nam, understanding these factors will help students make informed choices.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Ngo Tri Dung, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center at Hong Bang International University (HIU), emphasized the importance of clearly identifying one's preferred career path.

Introducing the "Be a Hiuer" experience day currently taking place at HIU, Mr. Dung said that this is an event organized by the school to guide candidates in registering their preferences.

At the same time, it helps candidates to once again clearly identify the most suitable and preferred career path, thereby making accurate decisions about their priority choices.

He encouraged students to directly participate in events organized by the university to better understand the environment they will be in for the next 4-5 years. In addition, students would gain practical experience, meet faculty members to ask questions about their chosen field of study and future careers, and receive many attractive gifts and scholarships.

Balanced cut-off scores from previous years

After identifying their preferred field of study, candidates begin selecting their desired university based on their scores and the university's admission standards from previous years.

Dr. Tran Khac Thac, Head of Training Department, Water Resources University, stated that according to statistics, the average scores in the high school graduation exam are quite high; however, the general admission scores for universities, if they increase, will only be by 1-1.5 points depending on the specific major.

The reason is that universities have high enrollment quotas while the number of applicants is moderate. Following the current trend of educational mobility, many students choose to study abroad or pursue other professions.

Specifically for the Water Resources University, the predicted cutoff scores are expected to be similar to those of 2023.

"According to the admissions guidelines, students should put their preferred field of study as their first choice," Mr. Thac said.

MSc. Tran Nam also stated that without the results of the virtual filtering process, no one can provide an accurate cutoff score for 2024. Therefore, all opinions are for reference only, and candidates should consider them when making their choices.

Candidates should note that the more candidates choose a major, the higher the cutoff score will be, and the higher the average score in the high school graduation exam, the higher the cutoff score will also be. Therefore, candidates can refer to the cutoff scores of the school for the past 3 years.

"Students should choose multiple options to minimize risks during the admissions process," advised Master Tran Nam.

Register to secure your place in the competition.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , from July 18th to 5 PM on July 30th, candidates can register, adjust, and supplement their application preferences an unlimited number of times.

Each candidate will only be admitted to their highest-ranked choice among the options they registered for, so candidates should choose their first choice carefully.

"When arranging your preferences, you need to identify which major and university you most want to study and prioritize it as your first choice, following that order until all preferences are listed."

"For candidates who are admitted early, simply placing their conditionally admitted university as their first choice will guarantee university admission," added Master Ngo Tri Dung.

When registering their preferences, candidates should check their information and make corrections if there are any errors. Candidates need to view the list of eligible preferences for admission. If a candidate has a preference that meets the admission criteria, the system will display it by default on the screen for the candidate to select.

If a candidate does not have a preferred choice that meets the admission requirements, the system will display a screen to add a choice by entering the order of preferences - school code - major code and confirming registration.

From July 28th to August 3rd, candidates must pay the application fee online according to the number of their preferred choices, following the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

By 5 PM on August 19th at the latest, universities and colleges will announce the cutoff scores and results of the first round of admissions. Successful candidates must confirm their enrollment on the system before August 28th.
