Defeating Vietnam, Indonesia ends 17-year streak of no wins at Asian Cup

On the evening of January 19, the Vietnamese and Indonesian teams competed in a match that would decide their place in the next round in Group D. Coach Shin Tae-yong and his team won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Asnawi Mangkualam.

With this defeat, the Vietnamese team was eliminated. Coach Troussier said: " In football, there are always winners and losers. When you have tried your best, there is nothing to regret or bow your head. I am ready to accept defeat. I have no regrets. We tried our best against a strong opponent ."

" This was a good quality match, decided by a penalty, a small mistake in the penalty area. This is a small detail that affected the match. Even though we lost, I am still proud. The players showed a very strong fighting spirit, trying 100% until the last second. They kept the faith ," the French coach added.

After this defeat, the Vietnamese team will play a formality match with Iraq. In March, coach Troussier and his team will have 2 matches with Indonesia in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
