Director and People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh passed away at the age of 85.

(NLDO) – Director and artist Pham Thi Thanh devoted her entire life to Vietnamese theater. She recently passed away at the age of 85.

According to information from People's Artist and Painter Doan Chau, on the morning of September 4, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh (born September 24, 1941) breathed her last due to old age, at the age of 85. She was a contemporary stage director, former Director of the Youth Theater, and former Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts.

Before retiring due to old age, she was Deputy Director of the Center for Research, Preservation and Promotion of National Culture, Vice President of the Hanoi Literature and Arts Association, and President of the Vietnam UNESCO Club Association.

Her father, Mr. Pham Khac Hoe, was from Duc Tho, Ha Tinh , a member of a family of scholars. Her great-grandfather had passed the bachelor's exam, her grandfather was a teacher in the village, and her father had passed the bachelor's exam and worked as a clerk.

It was Mr. Pham Khac Hoe who had great merit in persuading King Bao Dai to abdicate and was highly trusted by President Ho Chi Minh . He was the one who drafted the abdication edict for King Bao Dai on August 22, 1945.

Mrs. Pham Thi Thanh is very proud when talking about her beloved father, although she does not have many memories and years with him.

The mother of People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh was the second wife of Mr. Hoe, a beautiful woman, the younger sister of poet Ung Binh Thuc Da Thi, the niece of poet Mien Tham and the great-granddaughter of King Minh Mang.

People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh inherited her father's love of literature and her mother's sweet Hue singing voice. It was her mother who directly guided Pham Thi Thanh to choose performing arts to pursue throughout her life. From a young age, she cherished her dream of art.

It was during the days of wandering around practicing arts and performing arts that the dreamy soul of a 16-year-old girl, Pham Thi Thanh, fell in love with a man nearly 30 years older than her, People's Artist Dao Mong Long.

In 1970, she was sent by the State to Russia to study stage directing. After 7 years of study, she returned home and, together with Director Ha Nhan, wrote a project to establish the Youth Theatre.

The project was accepted, in 1987, the Youth Theatre was established. Ms. Ha Nhan was the Director, female director Pham Thi Thanh was the Deputy Director. On the day of admission for the Theatre, more than 1,200 candidates came to take the exam and the Organizing Committee only selected 20 people.

In that first course, there were many people who later became famous artists such as People's Artist Lan Huong, People's Artist Le Khanh, Meritorious Artist Chi Trung, People's Artist Minh Hang, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen, People's Artist Anh Tu, Meritorious Artist Duc Hai...

Being associated with the ups and downs of the golden age of theater history, the subsidized society, and then the transition to a market economy, she was close to great names of the theater such as The Lu, Song Kim, Nguyen Dinh Nghi..., witnessing many smiles and tears of theater people leaving and staying.

The theater artists were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh.
