The results of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival were announced on the evening of May 27 (French time), or the morning of May 28 Vietnam time. The film Anatomy of a Fall by female director Justine Triet won the Palme d'Or, and this is the next time French cinema has been named at this prestigious award.
Director Pham Thien An received the Golden Camera award.
Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell by director Pham Thien An won the Camera d'Or award and was screened in the Directors' Fortnight category.
This is the only Vietnamese work at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, telling the story of Thien, a man who has to carry his sister-in-law’s body back to his hometown after she died in a car accident. On the journey, Thien has to bring Dao, his nephew, back to his hometown. The trip has raised many thoughts in Thien about the meaning of life.
Previously, the film Inside the Golden Cocoon was screened on May 24 at the Directors' Fortnight and received a 5-minute standing ovation. Western film critics gave much praise to Inside the Golden Cocoon for its filmmaking techniques and the themes that Pham Thien An touched upon through each frame.
Filmmaker Tran Anh Hung wins Best Director award at Cannes 2023
Alongside Pham Thien An, Vietnamese-American director Tran Anh Hung, who directed The Pot-Au-Feu , was named Best Director. This is Tran Anh Hung's first directing gold statue after many films competing at Cannes, following The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and Vertical Summer (2000).
Before the closing night, The Pot-Au-Feu was welcomed at Cannes when it premiered and received a 7-minute standing ovation. The film is set in the late 1880s in France, interwoven with a love story and cuisine .
