Fundamental investment for data center

Vietnam is facing an ever-higher demand for data centers (DCs).

This need serves the national comprehensive digital transformation process that is at its peak and the wave of artificial intelligence (AI) applications, especially generative AI (GenAI). In the data-driven era, without DC capacity, it is impossible to accelerate AI applications and digital transformation.

The market value of DC in Vietnam is forecast by market research company W&S Market Research to reach 1.03 billion USD in 2028 and more than 1.26 billion USD in 2030. In the Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in early 2024, Vietnam will turn some of its cities into regional DCs (Digital Hubs).

In recent years, many large Vietnamese technology enterprises such as VNPT, Viettel, CMC, FPT, VNG... have invested heavily to build more large-scale and internationally-standard DCs capable of serving both domestic and international needs. Leading the way is Viettel Group, which in April 2024 opened Viettel IDC in Hoa Lac (Hanoi) with 2,400 rack cabinets and a "huge" power capacity of up to 30 MW (enough energy to supply 10,000 old-generation rack cabinets). Viettel has also started construction of the largest DC in the country (in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) with a designed capacity of 140 MW, in the Top 10 in Southeast Asia. Up to now, Viettel has had 15 Viettel IDCs operating in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, there are 4 enterprises planning to invest in super-large-scale DCs with a total capacity of 220 MW. However, the demand for DC is still huge. Currently, the total capacity is only 182 MW, far from the target of 870 MW by 2030.

DCs are "super-energy hungry" and emit a lot of heat into the air. According to Mr. Thomas Rooney, Deputy Director of Industrial Services at Savills Hanoi, AI DCs also consume 2-5 times more electricity than conventional DCs. Therefore, DCs must ensure energy optimization requirements, both achieving the highest possible energy efficiency and protecting the living environment. Viettel's new DC in Hoa Lac is the first DC in Vietnam to receive green credit funding from HSBC Bank.
