Candidates leave after taking the 10th grade literature exam in 2025

On the morning of June 6, more than 76,000 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City entered the 10th grade exam with the first subject being literature. This was also a subject that caused many surprises for students, when the social essay writing section mentioned the issue of "knowing how to read", which, according to the explanation, is knowing how to recognize good values such as truth, love, justice... that are being obscured, just because sometimes we are "naive and immature".
A notable point in the topic is the excerpt from the work Flying through the clouds - one of the three books that collect the best articles ever published in Hoa Hoc Tro Newspaper by author Ha Nhan. The excerpt focuses on analyzing the need for social network users to be alert and selective in finding information in today's "information-filled society", including the following passage:
"We fall into a maze of fabricated information woven and led by someone, and then we contribute to spreading that information, causing many serious consequences. When we learn to read, we see ourselves gradually growing up. But when we learn to read, we know we are gradually maturing...".
These lines are the reason why Nguyen Hoang Phat, a student at Hai Ba Trung Secondary School (District 3), developed a social argument from everyday stories in his life. There, a group of famous people prioritize personal interests, leading to scams and forcing the younger generation like him to "feel the lies and find the truth behind words on the internet".

"To prove this point, I will recount the recent upsetting incidents of singer Jack (real name Trinh Tran Phuong Tuan, also known by his stage name J97) such as the delay in delivering a lightstick priced at VND997,000/piece, or most recently the apology letter scandal with actress Thien An," Phat said.
"There is no case more suitable to use as evidence than this one. I'm sure many of my friends think the same way," the male math major student emphasized.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Song Thu, a student at Binh Loi Trung Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), included Miss Thuy Tien (real name Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien) in her social essay.
"I gave two examples, first is that Miss Thuy Tien relied on people's trust to make a profit (through the vegetable candy incident that caused the beauty queen to be prosecuted and temporarily detained for "Deceiving customers" - PV), second is that many people easily listen to others, contributing to the spread of false information", the female student recalled.
Thu added that, for her, the first literature test under the new program was "easier" than previous years' tests. Thu herself also applied an outline in the form of an argumentative essay on life issues to develop her answer to the 4-point question above.

Tran Nhat Vy, a student at Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), chose a character who has also faced many controversies related to charity stories during this time: Actor Hoai Linh. "For me, 'knowing how to read' is a rather unfamiliar topic. I also used the outline provided by my teachers to develop my essay better," Vy added. "If I read carefully, I will be able to do all the literature questions this year, even though they are difficult."
Speaking to Thanh Nien , some candidates said they did not use any specific characters as evidence in their essays, but developed their arguments from the material provided in the question, such as "We judge and throw stones at a person based on a few lines of news spread on the internet, and by the time we realize the truth is not necessarily so, it is too late...". Many candidates wrote the entire question in about 2-3 pages, with one candidate saying he wrote up to 4 pages.

In recent years, the 10th grade literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City has always been the center of attention. In particular, in the 2024 exam, the social argument section required candidates to express their attitude towards the viewpoint "Know how to think with the heart" by author Thu Giang Nguyen Duy Can, and in 2023, candidates had to write an essay with the given title: "If good thoughts are not expressed in words...".
Today (June 7), candidates continue to take the math exam in the morning and the specialized subject in the afternoon. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, 76,435 candidates registered for the 2025 exam, with a total enrollment target of 70,070 places, meaning about 91.7% of candidates will be admitted to public schools. On the other hand, the total enrollment target for private schools is nearly 19,500 places, helping to reduce competitive pressure compared to previous years.
