Cage fish farmers in Hai Duong have proactively reduced fish density in cages, creating a more airy living environment.

Proactive breeder

Although he has been raising fish in cages for a long time, recently Mr. Nguyen Tat Thuan in Binh Lang commune (Tu Ky) has paid more attention to cleaning the cages, observing the weather, river water level... According to Mr. Thuan, because the fish cages and nets are soaked in water for a long time, dirt and impurities stick to them, so after harvesting, he has to pull the nets up and wash them clean. With iron cages, he uses a brush to clean the dirt that sticks to them.

Mr. Thuan also pays more attention to weather changes, especially during the changing seasons. At that time, he regularly uses aeration to increase dissolved oxygen in the water, uses BKC, Emzone, and lime powder to make the water clearer and disinfect it. During the process of raising fish, with leftover food and waste stagnating below, he rents a sludge and waste suction machine to help the water circulate and become cleaner. "Last year, nearly 20 tons of my family's fish died, causing huge economic losses. After that, I proactively researched and applied many measures to keep the area where the fish cages are placed clean, creating conditions for the fish to grow and develop," said Mr. Thuan.

Cage fish farmers have also proactively reduced the stocking density to create a more airy environment for the fish to live in. Currently, each cage has a volume of 54 m3 , Mr. Vuong Quang Nam in Quoc Tuan commune (Nam Sach) raises about 10,000 fish fry, a decrease of about 10% compared to before. When the fish get bigger, he moves the fish to another cage. When the fish weigh 4 - 5 kg/fish, he sets the stocking density to about 1,500 fish/cage, a decrease of 500 fish/cage compared to before. "The bigger the fish, the lower the stocking density. Reducing the stocking density makes the space more airy, the fish can swim more comfortably. In case the fish get sick, it will limit cross-infection," Mr. Nam shared.

Tight control

Cage fish farming brings good income to Hai Duong people. Therefore, the number of cage fish farmers is increasing, the scale of cage farming is expanding. However, in early April 2024, in Tien Tien commune, Nam Dong ward (Hai Duong city), Nam Tan commune (Nam Sach) ... there was a mass fish death, causing many cage fish farming households to be devastated. According to the inspection results of the Department of Fisheries and the Aquaculture Research Institute I, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), the fish died due to very low dissolved oxygen concentration in the water, high concentration of toxic gas. The main cause is due to changes in weather, low river water level. When detecting weak fish, people did not immediately use aerators to increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water...

To overcome this situation, the Department of Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Environment) has guided people to apply many measures for cage fish farming. Every month, the department coordinates to collect water samples in aquaculture areas, including cage fish farming areas, to check the indicators. Thereby, helping to detect water quality early and give recommendations and instructions to cage fish farmers.

The Department regularly inspects compliance with regulations on cage fish farming; organizes training and equips households with knowledge...

Cleaning the cage helps the water environment become cleaner.

Up to now, cage fish farmers in Hai Duong have basically complied with the regulations on cage fish farming. Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong in Dong Ngo residential area, Nam Dong ward (Hai Duong city) said that although his family's cage fish farming was going smoothly, when he was guided by the professional agency, his family accepted and strictly followed the regulations. This is a way to protect the property of his family and those who raise cage fish together.

With the participation and guidance of authorities and the initiative of the people, cage fish farming in the province has stabilized, helping to increase people's income.

Hai Duong currently has nearly 8,000 fish cages, a decrease of about 170 cages compared to the beginning of 2024. Of which, Nam Sach district has over 3,300 cages, the most in the province; Hai Duong city has about 2,000 cages; Tu Ky district has 800 cages... Since the beginning of the year, the farming situation of the people has been stable, there have been no outbreaks of disease or fish deaths due to environmental pollution or water sources.
