During a visit to Trong Hoa No. 1 Primary and Secondary School, we had the opportunity to attend a meeting of the "Leaders of Change" Club. The club has 30 members, including a five-person leadership team. Under the guidance of school teachers, the students gained knowledge about children's rights, preventing child abuse, injuries, school violence, child marriage, consanguineous marriage, etc., through activities such as drawing, group discussions, and role-playing.
Cao Phuong Linh, a Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority student in 8th grade and a member of the club, shared that since its establishment, the club has held regular meetings once a month. During these meetings, they not only discuss and share problems they encounter in life but also perform short skits. Through club activities, they have become more confident and bolder in expressing their thoughts.

The "Leaders of Change" Club at Trong Hoa No. 1 Primary and Secondary School is one of four clubs in Minh Hoa district established since the implementation of Project 8 "Implementing Gender Equality and Addressing Urgent Issues for Women and Children" under the National Target Program for Socio -Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Regions giai đoạn 2021-2030. Currently, there are also "Leaders of Change" clubs in the community in Y Leng village, Dan Hoa commune; in Mo O O, On, and Yen Hop villages, Thuong Hoa commune; and in Luong Nang village, Hoa Son commune.
After launching the clubs, the Minh Hoa District Women's Union organized training sessions to guide the children on management skills, club activities, and basic knowledge about child marriage, consanguineous marriage, and preventing school violence. Through this, they learned to speak up and protect themselves, becoming confident and assertive enough to change their way of thinking, learning, and doing in life; gradually eliminating outdated habits and customs.
“With the expectation of changing the perceptions of the younger generation right from their school days, in the coming time, the Women's Union at all levels in Minh Hoa district will continue to coordinate and effectively promote the ‘Leaders of Change’ Club model in schools and communities, and strengthen the organization of training and improve the operational capacity of the Club… ensuring the voice and role of girls in the socio-economic development of the community,” said Ms. Dinh Thi Ngoc Le, President of the Minh Hoa District Women's Union.
To ensure the clubs' effectiveness, women's associations at all levels in the district have actively coordinated with relevant agencies and departments to organize training, improve operational capacity, and cultivate skills in organizing and maintaining club activities. With rich and diverse activities, the clubs have contributed to the successful implementation of programs and policies related to children, addressing children's issues; supporting teachers and parents in effectively educating students and preventing gender-based violence, child abuse, trafficking, kidnapping, and child marriage…
In 2024, the Community Leaders Club of Y Leng village, Dan Hoa commune, participated in the "Talented Leader" competition organized by the Provincial Women's Union and won first prize – a remarkable achievement demonstrating the effectiveness of the "Leaders of Change" club model. Villages where club members reside have seen significant changes: school dropout rates have ended, child marriage and consanguineous marriage have ceased, domestic violence has decreased considerably, girls are protected, and they are more confident and assertive in life. Villagers focus on economic activities, provide for their children's education, and improve their living standards.
According to Ms. Dinh Thi Ngoc Le, Chairwoman of the Minh Hoa District Women's Union, the "Leaders of Change" Club is both a beneficial playground and a place for sharing information, helping students in disadvantaged areas and ethnic minority regions of the district gain more knowledge about adolescent psychology, gender, and communication skills in the family and school; at the same time, becoming pioneering "nucleus" in changing perceptions, eliminating gender stereotypes, and spreading positive information and messages. More importantly, the "Leaders of Change" Club is one of the activities that allows women and children to have a voice and affirm their role in the community.
