The left dike of Ben Hai, a section within the Cua Tung storm shelter area through Vinh Giang commune and Cua Tung town (Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province), has had its slopes eroded in many places, with a very high risk of collapse.

According to the reporter's records on the morning of November 26, at the left dike of Ben Hai, within the scope of the Cua Tung Storm Shelter, a series of damaged slopes appeared, including 2 points where sea waves eroded and washed away a large amount of soil under the concrete road surface.

At a severely damaged spot right in front of the market, several concrete slabs of the slope collapsed, leaving a deep, empty hole under the concrete road surface. The eroded area was nearly 5 meters long, going about 2 meters into the dike roadbed.

At this location, the authorities have put up a warning line. On the morning of November 26, there were quite large waves in the Cua Tung fishing port area, so the risk of these damaged spots becoming more and more serious is present.

Mr. Vo Van Tra, Director of the Project Management Board, land fund development and industrial clusters, and sea tourism in Vinh Linh district, said that the left dike of Ben Hai was damaged by the impact of storm No. 6 at the end of October.

Specifically, since the night of October 26, in Vinh Linh area, there has been heavy rain, strong winds, and rapid rising of river water levels causing widespread flooding, causing the embankment to collapse at 9 locations; in which erosion swept away the soil under the concrete road surface at 2 locations, with a very high risk of collapse.

“We have coordinated with local authorities to put up warning signs, prohibiting vehicles from passing through this dike. At the same time, we have reported the damage to the Cua Tung Storm Shelter to the Standing Office of the District Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue. The estimated cost for repairs is about 750 million VND,” said Mr. Vo Van Tra.
