Proposal to soon invest and upgrade items of Can Tho International Airport

Can Tho International Airport, currently operated and exploited by Vietnam Airports Corporation, is identified as a hub for aviation logistics development in the region and is prioritized for investment and upgrading in the 2021 - 2030 period.

Can Tho City People's Committee has just sent an official dispatch to the Ministry of Construction regarding the proposal to soon invest in and upgrade items of Can Tho International Airport.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, after the merger, Can Tho City has a natural area of ​​more than 6,360 km² and a population of over 4.1 million people; there are 103 commune-level administrative units with 31 wards and 72 communes.

Can Tho City has an important position as a regional center, a core urban area, and plays the role of the "heart" of the Mekong Delta region.

This locality is striving to become a national growth pole by 2030, playing the role of a driving force for development, spreading and leading the whole region; a center of trade, services, logistics and maritime economy of the region; a center of startups, science and technology and innovation, industrial development, concentrated digital technology; processing industry and high-tech agriculture; developing education and training high-quality human resources to meet the socio-economic development requirements of the city and the region.

“The goal by 2045 is for Can Tho City to be an ecological, civilized, modern city, becoming a smart, livable city in Vietnam, belonging to the group of developed cities in Asia,” said the leader of Can Tho City.

According to the leader of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, in order to quickly achieve the goal of becoming the administrative - political center of the Mekong Delta region, creating a driving force for the region's development, Can Tho City has identified the task of investing in developing synchronous, modern, regionally connected transport infrastructure, and synchronously connecting transport modes as one of the key breakthrough tasks.

In Decision No. 287/QD-TTg dated February 28, 2022 of the Prime Minister approving the Mekong Delta Regional Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, Can Tho International Airport was identified as the focal point for aviation logistics development in the region and prioritized investment and upgrading in the period 2021 - 2030.

In particular, Can Tho International Airport has a scale of phase 1 with a capacity of 7 million passengers/year, land use area of ​​388.9 hectares; phase 2 will have a capacity of 12 million passengers/year, land use area of ​​728.9 hectares.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa said that recently, the Government and the Prime Minister have resolutely directed investment in developing the expressway network across the country, including the Mekong Delta.

In 2026, the completion and operation of expressway projects in the region will create a great driving force for the region's development, creating favorable conditions for Can Tho International Airport to play the role of a hub for the development of aviation logistics in the region, after closely linking with the expressway network in the region.

To soon form a hub for aviation logistics development, the People's Committee of Can Tho City proposed that the Ministry of Construction consider and approve the implementation of investment procedures and upgrade items of Can Tho International Airport according to the plan, in order to realize the goal of becoming a regional logistics center, a hub connecting road and air transport.

Can Tho International Airport, currently operated by ACV, has a passenger terminal with a total floor area of ​​20,750 m2, capable of serving 3 million passengers/year, the largest in the Mekong Delta region.

The airport currently has a 3,000 m long runway, night lighting system, and ILS precision landing system to receive wide-body aircraft such as B777-300ER, B747-400 and equivalent.
