The German Data Protection Commission has asked Apple and Google to remove the DeepSeek app from their app stores in the country, citing concerns about user data security. This is not the first time DeepSeek has faced a similar ban in Europe.

DeepSeek illegally transferring data?

“The request was made because DeepSeek is illegally transferring users’ personal data,” said Meike Kamp, Germany’s National Data Protection Commissioner. “DeepSeek has not yet been able to provide the protection authority with convincing evidence that German users’ data is protected in China to the same level as in the European Union.”

According to DeepSeek’s privacy policy, the app stores a lot of personal data, including requests to its AI programs and uploaded files, on servers located in China. Ms. Kamp expressed concern about the possibility that other countries could have extensive access to this personal data.

Google has confirmed it has received the notice and is reviewing the request. Meanwhile, DeepSeek and Apple have not yet commented on the incident.

DeepSeek's string of legal troubles in Europe and the US

The move from Germany is the latest in a string of legal issues that DeepSeek has faced globally.

Earlier this year, Italy blocked the app from app stores due to a lack of clarity about its use of personal data. The Netherlands has also banned DeepSeek on government devices, and Belgium has advised officials not to use the platform.

In February, a Spanish consumer rights group asked the government's data protection agency to investigate DeepSeek, although no ban has been issued.

DeepSeek made headlines when it claimed to have developed an AI model that could compete with major US companies like OpenAI at a lower cost and with open source code. However, the company is under scrutiny in the US and Europe over its data privacy policies.

Even US lawmakers are planning to introduce a bill that would ban US law enforcement agencies from using any AI models developed in China, reflecting growing concerns about data security and technology.
